Kobo really need to get their act together in regards to Australian distribution.

With the Kindle now easily available via a number of brick&mortar stores they're at the risk of getting left behind.

The kindle is better known in the first place, it is easier to buy in Australia. How easy do kobo want to make it for their competitors ?

I hear you.

I wanted to buy a KT to replace my wife's JBL, but it was not going to happen. So I purchased a Kindle 3 for her from DSE instead.

My KT purchase is going nowhere fast either, which is a problem as I have a cover to review.

Sounds like my PRS-300 replacement will be another Sony, the PRS-T1, which will be available in October as they are taking pre-orders.

I saw kindles stocked at Woolworths near the checkout yesterday. It's so convenient to pick one up and checkout.

In my opinion the Kobo has a much nicer design, packaging and unique ereader features that would catch a shopper's attention. Shame they don't stock in Australia yet.

Certainly have. Woolies, DSE and Big W are all owned by Woolworths Group.

My wife has sold four to date now. She works for Woolies.

Be interesting if they get the new models (Kindles) when internationally available. Not the best of times to pick up this older Kindle model - though I wonder how aware the general public is?

For most people it will be the first time they have seen an ereader. They may have heard of a Kindle but probably haven't seen one before.

Unless they do some research they won't know that they are getting the old model - mind you it still does a pretty good job reading books and that's all most people will want!

Well, the new ones are still US-only, as far as I know.

But going to awareness, I work at a Dick Smith, and I had one customer yesterday and three today ask about the new Kindles. News travels fast. That said, a lot of the customers at my store have decent background knowledge and/or are already nerds.

Just tried to buy it on Chapters Indigo and it said

"US and International Shipping Restrictions - eReading devices are not eligible for shipping to a US or international address. Please choose or enter a Canadian address for your order."

I also tried borders.com but they don't sell it.

Just wondering where I go from here?

You could try and score one off like I did or place an ad in the flea market forum? Try ebay?

I was successful or so I thought through Chapters. They cancelled the order.

I am now looking seriously at getting a PRS-T1 to replace my PRS-300

My husband has given up on the wait for them to arrive in Collins, and has pre-ordered a Sony Touch. Having seen the problems they are having with the KT in New Zealand, I'm glad he made that decision.

Having said that, I love my KT and haven't had really serious problems with it. I think it will be a pity if Kobo doesn't get its share of the Australian market, but the availability of Kindles in various shops and the new Sony coming soon added to the delays in Collins having Kobo available don't bode well.

If and when you get the SONY in house I'd be interested in what you think of it in comparison to your Kobo. I agree re: Kobo loosing having any kind of lead in the AU market, but then when it is the difference of focusing on our market that is a blip on the world stage and getting units to say Germany I can see why we may not be high on the list.
