That's the thing that always kind of frustrates me about Android. I like the idea of an OS that isn't manufacturer dependent, so that you have the option to avoid the "walled garden" if you like. But Android takes power away from the manufacturers and gives it to the carrier...which is even worse IMO.

Of course there is always jailbreaking.

A 10” device just would not fit! Even though the processor is not a dual core, it’s still plenty speedy, and more than adequate for me. Since the TAB has sold enough units, you can be sure that a Honeycomb ROM will come in the next two months. Forget Sammy or Verizon, Sammy almost never delivers --- that is what I read.

With regard to size -- great if it works for you. I always wear jeans (in our business you would actually make a bad impression if you showed up in a business suit ), so 5" is tops. And putting a big device in a cargo pocket is not comfortable. Obviously 10" works only when you have a bad or briefcase with you.

Which is why I never buy anything that is locked, that can't be rooted or jailbroken. Americans are too used to "buy now, pay through your nose later". For my Android phone nobody but me has the power to decide what I put on it.

Actually Samsung is quite fast with updates. As majority of International users are already on the latest Android. I think the problem is more of American carriers. Even a beta gingerbread rom is out for International users.

Well, I've been on Froyo here in the UK since before Christmas on my Galaxy S, and I think I read that the Gingerbread update is about ready to arrive (not that I really need it). I'm not sure whether three months counts as 'quite fast' but Samsung does get there.

Hans, in case you didn't hear about it -- http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/...lware-apps.ars

Google retains the power to forcibly remove programs from your Android handset. I'm not saying they'll abuse that power, and I imagine you'd want malware removed, but your statement isn't completely correct.

Hans' comment stands :

Quote:

He can put what he likes on to it. However, Google can remove it again if installed through the Google market. (I don't think they can remove apps installed from other sites.)

To be honest, in the case of removing malware, I'd like to consider that an 'update'.

So you can upgrade to Honeycomb now?

The user ROM provider for my Streak, he calls himself D.J. Steve, will release a Honeycomb ROM within the next 2 weeks (Google just published all the sources on February 28th). I am using his ROMs all the time, have been on standard ROMs for a very short time only. The question, of course, is how well Honeycomb will work on a 5" device. Parts of the interface have already been ported, like the music player.

Can you name a phone that has official gingerbread update. No other company has released gingerbread, google phones don't count as they work on them before they release the sourcecode.

Not that I'm aware of. I'm not knocking Samsung, doubtless it does take 3 months to update the manufacturer skins, apps and interface. However, that doesn't mean that 3 months is an acceptable delay between a new version of the firmware being released and it being updated for a particular phone.

It is an issue for Android that security fixes, for example, have these obstacles in the way of being rolled out quickly and effectively.

And they fit into my pants' pockets very easily. 7" is a step up, but for books it doesn't make much of a difference. And for newspapers, magazines, etc. a 9-10" device is much much better. So a 7" doesn't offer real portability and it doesn't offer full functionality.
I find the 6" - 7" size is small enough to fit in a jacket pocket and does offer a much more enjoyable experience than being forced to use an needlessly bulky 4.3" phone all the time while being clearly more portable than a 10" tablet that would require you to put it in a bag and isn't actually that comfortable to hold up for as long as a smaller model.

For me the ideal combination would be a smaller and lighter phone, a 7" tablet or kindle and then a 10" tablet for home use where it is still more suited to reading than a normal pc.
