Quite disappointed that international markets are not getting this. I see no reason why it can't be rolled out simultaneously.

When Kobo staff were asked about this the day of release, they said that the files would be sent to the International partners within a couple of days. Then each of them will review the files and make them available to their customers.
I don't know why exactly it is done this way. It might just be that holding back a couple of days makes sense in case the initial rollout reveals something unexpected. |

I was running 1.4 Kobo original. I did not do the factory reset first. I installed the software 1.81 with the seven step guide and it seemed ok. But checking the files, some would not open (I had run into this once before and replacing the db fixed it). I resorted to the db replacement using the 1.8 as per the sticky. Seemed easy enough and I was able to connect with ADE and Kobo Desktop. ePubs opened from the reader in the ADE software and everything seemed recognised. But standalone, the epubs would not open: please authorise reader. But the reader was recognised as authorised when plugged in. When I finally did the factory reset at this point, and had to re-enter date and time, when connected to ADE it asked me to re-authorise then.
So a few hoops, but everything is now apparently working as expected. It sounds like a factory reset should be the first order of business, not an optional extra. But I'm just reporting my experience. Had the seven step thing worked, it is a nice, elegant upgrade path hand holding the user and showing all the expected steps and results. |

I beefed up the language in the first post to reflect this, Sensual Poet. I didn't want to say that people must do it first, as there are folks who will see the post only after they have already experienced a problem and there are some people who don't need to do it at all-depending on how they have used their readers before the update.

Yes, thanks, taming, I had read your note before proceeding. But I followed the Kobo info as presented. I went to the Kobo Desktop and the first thing it said was "time for an upgrade!" and I followed its steps. My point was the Kobo process may need to make this "reset" mandatory. But maybe not ... in my case it was.
I'm also not sure when the sqlite replacement is needed or what triggers that. I have DRM epubs from library books, and non-DRM epubs from other sources on the Kobo, in addition to non-epubs DRM books from Kobobooks loaded directly through the Kobo desktop sync process. The library books appeared on the books list but wouldn't open; non-epub kobobooks were fine. That's when I decided to replace the sqlite db. They showed up but until the factory reset, I couldn't read them. I think I'm rambling now. Good news is my OK (Original Kobo) is OK now. ![]() |

The way Kobo staff explained it to the beta group, the updates on the WiFi worked so well that they missed some of the things that could be different for this one. All the folks that have original Kobo's under the tree will do just fine with the update the way it is--those of us with our Kobos loaded up with all manor of things, not so well without additional steps.
It was definitely a learning process for the development team--and I am betting that next time they will have the beta testers more involved with testing the real world installation. We only tested with SD card images this go 'round. |

I asked a mod to please make this post a sticky when I asked for the title to be changed. They changed the title, but did not make it a sticky. It may be that then need more than one request for that to happen. If you think this post should become a sticky, please request it. If it's fine as it is, that's kewl too.

When this post falls down the list, folks seem to miss it and get in a bit of hot water with their updates. Any suggestions?

taming, I agree that this needs to be made a sticky - but I can't see any way to signal this to the moderators. Is there a request option, if so, where is it?

I pm'd a mod, but I guess you could click on the Report post thingie (to the right) of the karma. I don't know if it makes a difference where you are in the thread to do this.

Done, it did say that you could use "Report Post" for administrative functions as well as for inappropriate postings. We'll see if it works

<<SNIP>>
If you do have a corrupted Db, then instructions for replacing it can be found here. . Please note: when you are installing a new database, in 1.8 you will replace 3 things: the entire images directory, kepub directory, and database. this is different than 1.4 which did not have a kepub directory. Your preloaded books will have dictionary support after you replace these files. <<SNIP>> I did the factory reset and upgraded using the desktop app. Had a few ghost pdf files and want to replace the db. But I don't have a kepub to replace. I replaced the images directory and database in the .kobo directory. What do I do now, if anything? I dropped the kepub into the .kobo directory. Loaded a book and it seems to be working. -steve- |
