They are? I must admit, I'm surprised by this. What online bookstores and sources for books offer non-DRMed MOBI which aren't otherwise available in EPUB? That's the only way I can see how non-DRMed MOBIs would outnumber EPUBs.

EDIT: Or perhaps you were referring to how Amazon's selection of ebooks outnumbers everybody else's, and that includes non-DRMed MOBIs?

Palm

After reading this thread, I took my old Palm TungstenT in for the trade as I want to keep all of the actual ereaders in the house but a Palm is obsolete with my iPhone.

When I got there, I had to wait for the manager as the store was swamped. To be expected this time of year. When she was finally able to get to me, she said they couldn't take the Palm as a trade in since it is a phone. I explained that it is not a phone but a PDA that has ebook software on it and was my last ebook reader before purchasing my first 505. She looked in the system and said there was no category for a Palm Pilot (like those are still being made) and she couldn't do it. I proceeded to show her this thread on my phone. She still said that they could only take dedicated ereaders on the trade in. This is when I got a bit loud and asked if she was telling me that I drove all that way for them to say no, when it is obviously that the company had already said yes to others. She took the device with her to go talk to her general manager. She came back out and said that the Palm was not one of the devices they are allowed to take but the general manager was letting them do it any way.

So, 45 minutes later, I walked out with my new black 650.

This is not me complaining but letting people know you may have some trouble in store if you are taking something other than a Reader, Nook, or Kindle.

Good story.

What was the in-store price on the 650? Was it still $229 or the lower $199?

It was still $229. It would have been nicer if it was lower. We are now going to be selling my wife's Nook to get her a 650 as well, I believe. The Nook was really lacking in a couple area that the Sony's have always had down pat. She will be using her old 505 until we can get a 650 for her.

There are a large number of books here on Mobileread that are not available in EPUB but are available in Mobi; this is due to the large head start that Mobi received. Also, as you point out, there are a large number of DRM free mobis in the Amazon store. Conversely, there are very few books that are available in Epub that are also not available in Mobi. So, DRM-wise, Amazon leads in selection. In non-DRM books, the Kindle leads simply because of the number of mobis that have not been converted to EPUB and, again, due to the selection in the Amazon Kindle store. Don't get me wrong, this Sony is awesome. I love the touchscreen and the portability. But the Kindle is a fine device as well.

It took them a bit to accept my Ebookwise 1150 because it wasn't on the list, but they took it anyway. I also scored a nice deal on the lighted cover for my 350: they had it marked at $35 instead of $50 and they honoured the price.

I did it! I got my trade-in credit and bought a PRS-350 + leather cover for $101 shipped.

I was bummed- no sonystyle store anywhere within any amount of driving distance. I tried to do the online trade in and put in my blackberry 8330- in perfect condition (after reading about the palm thing) and they'll give me..... $9 So not worth it!

I really want a black 650. It's on my wish list!

The 650 is definitely better than the 505, but I personally would not recommend swapping the 505 for just $75 off!

I did, however, ditch my PRS-600. Still waiting on the credit.

I was actually considering it until I saw how much the 650 was and the fact they don't even have them in stock!

Love my 505, but the battery is starting to fizzle out, and I would like a new improved model. But they need to bring the price down.....

I used my cracked screened blue 505 for the credit, but sent my 600 to my beau's nephew for Xmas. I will be sending my gorgeous sangria red 505 to my sister in Cali. Although I love it dearly, I don't use it much and would enjoy it much more knowing my sister in Cali is able to use it.

I'll keep the 700, 650 and the K2.
