The Pettigrews gave their first ball at Christmastime and Momma said it was lavish, just lavish. They hired out a chamber ensemble from Greensboro and a caterer from there also.... Of course all the good Baptists of Neely sent their automatic theological regrets since, as far as they were concerned, the only place you could dance to was Hell, but most everybody else would have attended or had to die first.

.....The press of this country is now and always has been so thoroughly dominated by the wealthy few of the country that it cannot be depended upon to give the great mass of the people that correct information concerning political, economical, and social subjects which it is necessary that the mass of the people shall have, in order that they shall vote and in all ways act in the best way to protect themselves from the brutal force and the chicanery of the ruling and employing class.
..........— E.W. [Edward Wyllis] Scripps (1854 - 1926), American newspaper publisher and founder of The E. W. Scripps Company. Damned Old Crank: Self-Portrait of E.W. Scripps (published posthumously in 1951), page 145. |

"I am allowed the power of changing my form as suits the observation of the moment." - Mary Robinson (1758-1800), quote circa 1777.
Robinson was one of the most infamous and scandalous women of her age. She was a famed actress, and after a crippling disease, became a best-selling author. But in spite of her fame, she died penniless as she was born, having accumulated too many pre-publicatino debts on her works. I am always reminded of her around movie awards season when so many pretty young things with nothing in their heads flit about in front of photographers. They could stand to learn a thing or two from thier historical betters. |

.....That would be a good idea.
..........— Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869 – 1948), known more familiarly as Mahatma Gandhi, India's pre-eminent political and ideological leader during the Indian independence movement. While visiting England in 1930, this was the response he gave on being asked what he thought of modern civilization. Quoted in E. F. Schumacher, Good Work (1979). |

.....This we know: The earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the Earth. All things are connected like the blood that unites us all: Man did not weave the web of life, he is but a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web he does to himself.

There are two kinds of fool. One says, ‘‘This is old, and therefore good.’’ And one says, ‘‘This is new, and therefore better.’’
