The great game of life and death - just outside my living room window a few minutes ago. Some kind of beetle (odd-looking, very flat, sort of rectangular, with bright colours, was captured by a Cross spider (Araneus diadematus). |

My tomato plants have lost most of their leaves, but a second crop of fruits is coming to maturity. Yesterday and today I harvested three cherry tomatoes for breakfast
![]() The rest of the plants seems to have simply stopped growing, which I suppose is hardly surprising given the season. I'm wondering whether to eat the tiny leaves of rocket and tarragon before they shrivel and die, or to give them a chance to grow a bit more. Well, the tarragon at least won't grow more than this, I sowed it in the spring (well, late spring probably) and it's all of 3 cm high now. ![]() I did have a nice surprise last time I watered the plants (I hardly do it anymore now, it's been raining a lot and they don't need it if they have stopped growing I guess). There is some grass growing in the bowl I left on the windowsill for that purpose. I'm not sure it's the seeds I sowed, more probably random stuff brought by the wind or some flying creatures. It's nice anyway! I hope that in the spring the poppies I sowed will bloom ![]() |

Well done on the tomatoes !
From 12 seeds grew 5 sweetcorn plants, and on one of those we had a decent cob ! Very tasty too ![]() |

Unfortunately, yes - just the one. All the plants had flowers? that sprouted from the top (with seeds?) - but there was only the one cob that grew up against, halfway down, the stem. First time I've grown them, but they may be worthy of another try next year. |

Thanks and better luck next year. I've never tried to grow corn except when the family did when I was a kid but we had a huge garden and always had several rows of corn...mmmm....mmmmm good!

I've got a lot of things happening on this property - I could bombard you with everything but I'll try small pieces at a time.
First up, I've got dinosaurs running amok, smashing down the grass-trees and hogging the water supply. Always something new... always something exciting ( I'll put up the pictures of a few snakes and spiders later ) (I just realised, if you click on the grass-tree lizard image after it's loaded up, it'll show it FULL SIZE which is probably bigger than most screens - you can almost even see the image of me kneeling in front of it reflected in its eye! ![]() Paul.
