I'm upset.
Fall is too short. Two weeks ago it looked like this on the hillside near my house; ![]() This week the leaves are falling. Isn't there anyplace that has a longer autumn?!? Stitchawl |

SCREAM One of the things I do is install security programs. The designated computer is supposed to have no access to the internet and be used only for the security program. I even make custom flip charts on how to backup & how to restore the data. I tell them several times that the program will not work if the drive is ghosted, cloned, or put into another computer. This is security software. It's intended to get all screwed up if someone takes a copy of your hard drive and puts it in another computer to learn how to bypass security at your facility. Two to three times a year I'm sent all over Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and sometimes up to north west New York to rebuild a computer/security installation because one of two things have happened - 1) The IT dept ghosted/cloned a hard drive for a new computer, or 2) the IT department gave them a new system as an easier way to deal with a virus! The other cloned programs will work, ours will not. We, usually, get a call (days or weeks later) when they go to add/remove someone from the system. "Yes sir, where is the old computer?" "You/They did what! ![]() If I can get your system up even once to do a backup, I can set it up in a new computer with all your data intact. The worst cases have been hard drives going bad followed by viruses. And the worst virus took about 4 hours to remove. Change that! The worst case is usually the IT department giving you a new computer, and then either scraping it or wiping the hard drive to get rid of a virus so they can give it to someone else. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is very good. Use the free version to clean the infected computer. Turn off "system Restore", restart in "Safe Mode" with network connections, download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and run it in safe mode. That'll take care of a lot of problems. I personally use Avast (free version). The worst security system rebuild I was involved in had me and another guy on site for 2 1/2 weeks. EDIT - Avast will stop the virus download and warn you when you click onto a bad web page even in Internet Explorer. Last edited by SameOldStory; 11-15-2010 at 09:01 PM. |

I don't run security software at all, yes even on Windows machines. UAC on Windows 7 really helps a lot. . Also, any suspect downloads I would try on a virtual machine first. If it gets infected going back to a snapshot is a 5 second thing.

It rained today, and the leaves are falling, but our autumn has been kind of extended this year. First the sugar maples turned that glorious yellow-peach color a few weeks ago, then their leaves fell. In the past few days the dogwood trees have all turned red, and the hickory trees yellow. This is looking down my mom's street this afternoon:

The security software I install controls electro-mechanical locks, mag locks, gate locks, elevator locks. Basically, if you want to control who, what, when, and where someone goes in or out, our software/equipment will control it. Mostly used on military bases, nuclear-biological-chemical areas. But it can also be seen in many offices and universities. Heck, I bet a salesman will even sell you a full system to protect your parakeet cage.
![]() This kind of thing: ![]() ![]() The computer with the software will be well within the facility. Each access point only has the information needed to grant access to that door/entrance. |

YEa, we have those type of prox card locks are our office. I always thought it was funny because those high tech locks aren't gonna stop someone that really wants to get in... considering the drop ceiling and all. Of course, I would hope a real high security facility wouldn't over look something so simple as that.

Some rooms are encased in expanded metal behind the sheetrock, and above the ceiling. Both to act as a Faraday cage and to make surreptitious entry a bit more difficult. Under the floor was sheet metal. Where drop ceilings are used in such rooms the area above the tiles are monitored 24 hours. If a tile movement is detected, even during working hours, an alarm is generated, and must be investigated. That would be somebody else’s rant.
I would be escorted into these areas with an extra person walking ahead of us shouting "Uncleared, uncleared." so that everyone could close their doors and/or cover their work. It was kind of like when an Untouchable would walk thru a village way back in India. "Unclean, unclean." ![]() One example of an area where our products are used is on the door to a coroners evidence room. You have to have permission to get past the lobby. No big deal there. But then you need access to the floor where the evidence room is located. Even if two, or more, people are going thru the same door at the same time, each must log their entry by using their proximity ID card. The evidence room can only be opened by two people with cards and PINs. The reason for all that was some quantity of drugs from an overdose turned up missing. Now they can see who opened the door. When it was opened. How long the door was open and when it was shut. Entering the room starts a DVR recording of what happens when the people are in the room. Just think about it for a moment. YOU really do want all of that going on if you're one of the people who has access to that room. |
