Aha I did that yesterday on a 505 (there were 2 going) I sniped (bid in the last minute) on the wrong one and missed out (i.e my snipe value 161 pounds. The other one went for 160 and the one I did went for 166. I was too scared to go for both in case I won both

So now someone may snipe me out of my top dog position at the last minute which will be tommorrow

They may, if your current bid is your maximum. If it is, you can either increase your maximum (most snipers are only bidding a small amount over the current highest bid, and so if your highest is higher, you win), or you can snipe yourself, a degree over what you expect that other snipe to be.

If your current highest bid is less than the maximum you've entered, and they snipe an amount less than your maximum, you win. It's the highest maximum that wins the auction (though it'll only increment your winning bid one step past their snipe, and not all the way to your maximum).

Sometimes you get bargains. (I've got good deals on lenses and cameras). Sometimes you just don't get anything. C'est la vie.

I disagree... if you loose a bid for $2 that you were willing to pay... why didn't you bid higher? Just bid the max you are willing to pay... and if you loose you won't feel bad... because it was over your hard stop price.

If you really want it use the Buy Now...

It's probably a matter of subjective necessity and desire. I happily lose a bid on a not-so-necessary-but-desirable-item by $2, for the joy I get at winning said item sometimes for an absolutely bargain price. For most true necessities, I just go to the shop (or, as you say, look for the Buy Nows on eBay).
