Thank you.

We **try** not to scatter packages all over the site.
You will find exceptions (Collection's Manager, the maintainer is in school).

So the links point to the 'usual' place for the various packages, even if the thread they are in does not have anything to do with JB subject.

I'm stuck, I get an Update Error 007 after the last Update_jailbreak_hotfix_1.14.N_install.bin step

Specs

G000K9, Kindle Basic 2 (Black), KT3, 8th generation
Bought in the USA though Amazon
Had Ad's removed today by requesting via Amazon chat

Followed Step 1:
Airplane mode, downloaded file and downgraded to factory firmware, factory_KT3_5.8.0_initial
Currently sitting at Firmware 5.8.0

Step 2:
Copied main-htmlviewer.tar.gz to the root of my Kindle
In the search bar, I typed ;installHtml and press return.

The screen flashes and the device reboots, BUT I do NOT see a new book in my Kindle, with the title "You are Jailbroken".

Step 3:
If I proceed to next step, Update with Update_jailbreak_hotfix_*_install.bin, I get Update Error 007.

Thoughts?

Installing the jailbreak is Step #5 -
You have certainly skipped a lot of the required details.

Carefully recheck everything you should have done (including verifying the md5sum of the factory firmware package).

I did compress a lot of it together for the sake of brevity...but the you're right, the one thing I glossed over because I thought it was optional and I'm not totally sure how to do it was validating the md5sum of the factory firmware package. How do I do this?

EDIT - Never mind. I googled it, I'm on a Mac and it was pretty straight forward. Yes, they match.

-Open Terminal.
-Type MD5 and hit the space button.
-Drag the file you have downloaded into the Terminal Window. ...
-Hit Enter.
-You should now see the MD5 Checksum so you can compare it to the string you have been given to ensure they match.

That is one possible cause (an incomplete firmware package).

Also -
What PC and OS did you use to download the *.tar.gz file?
Did you try opening the archive and looking at it before using it?
Or did your PC/Browser/OS/Filemanager display to you the contents of the archive before you used it? (for example: MacOSx)

I am using a Mac yes. I downloaded the tar.gz file but on my Mac it comes up only as *.tar No gz

I did not open the contents before dragging to Kindle root. Could my Mac be uncompressing automatically? I'm going to check my settings...

Yup - your Mac is destroying the special format archive.

Open a terminal and use wget (or curl) to download the archive, don't let the Mac file manager get hold of it.

What is happening:
There is such a thing as a 'tar bomb' which when opened would over-write system programs because it contains full pathnames, starting with the root '/'.

So a lot of "user friendly" consumer software converts any archive like that to a 'safe' version (without the leading '/').

Only thing is -
The jailbreak archive IS a "tar bomb" - it is SUPPOSED to be a "tar bomb" - that is critical to how it does its job.

That was it! What a perfect shit storm tonight. I normally don't use Safari but I was having issues with what i thought was Chrome and turns out my in-laws Wifi was garbage. After I moved closer to the Wifi range, I kept using Safari which had the option of "Open Safe Files after Downloading" Turned that off, re-did everything and all good to go!

Do I need to do the MRPI or KUAL stuff I've been reading about?

Keep on, keeping on, until (and including) Step #8.
Note: You have an 8th gen device, you have to use the booklet KUAL (which has a few known problems and nobody to fix them) and you have to call the package installer (MrPI) from the search bar.

I will indeed go ahead and update the firmware OTA when it becomes an option. But do I need to do KUAL if my sole purpose for all this is to simply add my own screensavers?

Read the directions in the SS add-in package, you decide.
There are a lot of options and using the menu for them is much easier.

Just wanted to say, brand new Kindle voyage owner here (previous Iliad, then Sony PRS-T1, the buggy version that kept freezing, hence finally switching to the Voyage), took it out of the box at 11am, plugged it so that it would get a full charge, and it's now 4pm, it's jailbroken, KUAL is installed, Koreader too, as well as a bunch of other stuff (screensaver, which took forever, but is finally on).
Thanks a lot for the very clear instructions.

There was a huge moment of doubt when after I uploaded the factory firmware, the Kindle restarted, did the update, restarted again and then got stuck on the start screen (the boy reading sitting below the tree), like forever, with no progress bar. I read that it could take a while, but because the update was already done and the kindle had restarted, I must say I panicked a little bit for a minute. But finally, things started to move again, turns out the update was still going on.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks, now I'm uploading my entire ebook library, too bad Calibre didn't want to upload a single epub on the Kindle and is forcing a conversion on me, I guess I'll have to find another way to test Koreader

Main drawback for buying a kindle for me was the "closed" system, so I came back on the forum a few days ago, and when I found out it could be jailbroken, I finally made up my mind. I bought mine second hand, because I saw somebody bought his in Germany recently and was unlucky enough to get a model he couldn't jailbreak. At least with an older one (6 months), I was sure it would work.

Smart move.
There are a few models out that we can not (yet) support.
Although there is, of course, work in progress to resolve that.

Also, everything that is posted as an update_*.bin pattern package name is "model locked" to the models it will work on.

The tool that creates those packages has not been updated for some of the newest models, hence none of those add-ins will load (even if the device was jailbroken).

In this last case, the maintainer of that tool is in school, which has reduced his hobby time to about zero.

Think of it:
a person who considers their degree more important than their hobby. Shame on him

I've the same error 007. I'm using Mac, i followed instruction .. even downloaded the tar.gaz using WGET / CURL , but I just can't seem to get pass the ;installHtml thing. It just flashes the screen and nothing else happen, no reboot or Jailbroken textfile.
