Font, ScreenSaver & USBNetwork Hacks for Kindle 2.x, 3.x & 4.x

First time Post, so I apologize for not being able to find what I need. I am attempting to set my Kindle 3g to screensave the last page read. It appears the file won't update and i get an error message. I have used the correct jailbreak, but the update_screensaver-lp-install.bin that i used is a thread written in 2009. Has anyone successfully turned their Kindle 3g to screensave the last page read? I really need this feature for my state of mind. Thanks for your response.

Why would you want this? I can see a case or two where this would be handy for some but not a "default" behavior.

Hi dcstoked,

There is a similar discussion thread. It is not possible with the current Kindle firmware but apparently it is possible using the alternate Duokan software. You can find the Duokan thread here.

I installed the Duokan software yesterday and I see you have the option of using the normal Kindle screensaver (hacked or not) or a custom screensaver. I'm not sure how to make save the last page read so you will have to ask the experts.

So if I understand this thread correctly, no one will ever be doing a Georgia2 Kindle 3 font porting due to commercial restrictions? I love this font and hate to see it kept away.

I tried one of the Georgia's from here after installing the font hack:

But of course all it did was make books refuse to open and screw up everything in general.

So no love for us folks with Georgia on our minds?

Hi, kindle newbie here. I installed the screensaver hack and it's working great but I want to mix in the original screensavers as well. So I googled this and found the originals were supposed to be in the linkss/backup folder. Mine is completely empty. Where can I find it? I downloaded the kindle-ss-0.18.N version

Update: *bang head* Ok I got it now. It's in the kindle version of the backup folder. Silly me. Sorry!

Just a guess, but... the screensaver images make it clear that the Kindle is in sleep mode and will not respond to input (next/last page, menu button, etc). Adding some sort of indicator to the page (like the "slide to unlock" graphic) may not be immediately apparent to some people and result in much button-mashing.

Yes, I MASHINGLY agree. I used my own photos and even after two months would still occasionally pick up the k3 and try a page turn or menu button or just start entering my password. One or two button actions and I would and remember to SlideThePowerSwitch. I redid my photos and added that text at the bottom.

think about it. What happens to a piece of paper with text on it if I don't manage to finish reading it all in 10 minutes or even when you leave it for an hour or two?

Correct, nothing. The text still stays displayed on it

OK, it's true that a lot of books tend to close themselves if you don't hold them open or don't use some weight or don't put them face down... But if I just hold it in my hands, I can look at a page for an hour without closing itself on me.

I think they just ruined one of the greatest features of eink - the ability to display text even when being turned completely off

I put my own custom screensaver on a kindle 3, and everything works perfectly except how do I get the pictures to come in full screen. I resized all of my pictures to 600 * 800 ha ha but when it displays them there's a be white border all around it. I can't get them to display full screen.

I have the Kindle K2i and I just updated to the version 2.5.7 with no problems.

I tried to install the screen saver hack but it always fail with the U006 error. I've read that this is normal. However, I've tried a few times and I get the same error. I've also tried to reboot the kindle via holding the switch for 15 seconds and via going to the menu. What do you guys think this could be? I think it might be that the latest hacks do not work for the 2.5.7 firmware.

First I tried update_jailbreak_0.4.N_k2i_install.bin in the zip file kindle-jailbreak-0.4.N.zip and then I tried update_jailbreak_k2i_install.bin in the zip file kindle-jailbreak-0.3.N.zip .

Fyi...I don't have any hacks. Strange but true. :-/

Any help would be appreciated.

If I understand you correctly, after you sideload the jailbreak into your K2i root folder, are you then going into the settings screen on your Kindle and actually selecting the update my Kindle option? This actually installs it onto your Kindle.

Once you have done this, and your Kindle reboots itself, you then have to install the separate screensaver hack as well (if I remember correctly). Once you do that, repeat the same process as in the last paragraph.

If the option to Update your Kindle from the settings screen is greyed after sideloading either the jailbreak or screensaver hack into your root directory, that usually means you either did it incorrectly, or have selected the incorrect hack.

If you successfully manage to update twice, you then need to actually "move" some new images into the screensaver folder and then reboot/restart.

At least that is how I recall the process going, anyway. Hope that helps some.

You are a lifesaver Tink-erbell. I was expecting to see the linkss directory after I applied the jailbrake update not after I applied the screen saver hack.
