We finished S3 of Dicte (Denmark). Dicte is a loose cannon of a journalist, systematically wrecking the lives of everyone she knows.

Started Annika - I liked Nicola Walker in Unforgotten but she and the whole Annika show are much livelier and more engaging IMO. Scottish accents are challenging though.

A hundred million years ago, when my husband could hear clearly, if we'd hang out with Scots' pilots training wherever he was, or the like, he'd (inadvertently, I assure you) pick up a wee accent that had to wear off over a few days. We once had a batch here (in AZ) training for 3 weeks and it's a miracle I didn't end up with a burr.

Now, he can't understand a GD word that anybody says, even with The World's Most Expensive Hearing Aids™. This leads to one unhappy camper, and a lotta lotta backing up and re-reading captions...sigh.

Debating on which is worse...

Finished Annika and it's excellent IMO. Asides usually come across as too gimmicky but Walker does them brilliantly, whether a lengthy discourse on Moby Dick or just a silent eye roll of disbelief at a suspect's preposterous lies. And though the usual family drama is there, it's nowhere near as lame as many shows these days.

I didn't think Walker's new show Marriage would interest me but now I may check it out.

Also finished an OK S2 of Dark Winds on AMC.

AMC also has a couple of shows based on Anne Rice works - anyone have any feedback on those?

Watched Scrooge (Christmas Carol) 1951 version, Alastair Sim Sunday afternoon. I started watching it in the 50s as a kid. Still my favorite Christmas movie. I'd planned to watch a number of holiday movies but haven't because of all the new things that are streaming and all the youtube livestreams and vlogs that I watch.

Watched Maestro on Netflix Sunday evening. Had a friend over who doesn't have internet. It was better than I expected and I might watch again some time. I'd heard a lot of criticism from people I know online who didn't like that it was more about his personal life than his music. But I thought the music was woven in so well (Bernstein's, Mahler and other music) to the story.

On YouTube there is a video of Bernstein rehearsing West Side Story for a recording with studio musicians and opera singers. My flute teacher was in it along with Julius Baker among the musicians. It was done in Bernstein's later years.

I love the Sims version! It's playing on TCM streaming right now, I believe (for those of us on this side of the pond).

I should add--there are some other very good ones, too. For a lot of years--I hate to admit this out loud--my fave was the Mr. Magoo one! LOLOL.

We watched Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings last night. It was entertaining and worked well as a stand alone movie (who wants to watch all the other 336 Marvel movies to get the story?).

Tonight we're probably going to watch Rebel Moon - Part one: A Child of Fire on Netflix.

Meanwhile I got a bunch of series I've started and liked, but haven't finished. Today I'm getting my Chromebook, which will make it easier to watch tv when cross stitching at night. So this week I hope to finished at least some of those series (Bodies, Shelter, Gotham Knights and Murder at the End of the World).

The 1951 Alastair Sim movie is available on youtube (very good quality). I have a DVD but my player doesn't work. I bought a digital version last year and was disappointed to find that there is an audio glitch during the all-important scene where Scrooge visits his nephew on Christmas day. So I watched it on youtube this year.

A friend recommended BBC A Christmas Carol Gone Wrong. It is free through Amazon on Roku TV with ads, but I think it is also on youtube. I watched it tonight and it was hilarious. It is under an hour, but the ads made it longer than I wanted it to be. I should have watched on youtube, since I have youtube premium no ads.

Years ago I watched Ae Fond Kiss and was hugely amused that when the characters were speaing English, my L1, I could barely follow them, but when they were speaking Panjabi-Urdu THEIR L1, I could grok A LOT more of what they were saying.

I was wrong, it's not the Sims version; the TCM CC playing this year is the 1938 version with Reginald Owen. Bummer. I may have to watch the Sims version on YT shortly. (Mr. H is becoming violently opposed to continuing to "pay" for TV in any form--whether it's Netflix, Hulu, etc. because it's all so much crap. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not necessarily saying he doesn't have a point, but I confess to considering paying for YT Red or whatever they call that. See if I could imagine switching over from DirectTV and all that.) @mlewis, you have the Youtube paid subscription, is that right? You like it?

I'm...boggled that it seems that Amazon Prime is going to ADS? For everything? Is that right? Anybody know? Because that will be the end of Prime at my house, for video, that's a fact. Mr. H will not do ads, period, end statement, end of discussion and honestly, I'm not far behind him. It's bad enough we're paying decent money for stuff that's 20, 30, 50, 60+ years old and in some cases, 90. And paying for network Telly reruns (like...oh, MSW, and that sort of thing) is pretty boggling. Was a time you couldn't give reruns away and now they charge for them. sigh.

It's true. I just got the Email yesterday.

Starting January 29, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements. This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership. We will also offer a new ad-free option for an additional $2.99 per month* that you can sign up for here.
