I owned and read the first Shannara trilogy when they first came out. They haven't been in my collection for a number of years (they were fairly early culls). From comments made at another site, they would probably now be marketed as YA but that category didn't exist at the time. I'm not sure I'd enjoy them now, so I'm probably going to pass on this deal (I've come across comments made by people who read them as teenagers and didn't like them as much when rereading them in their 30s and older).

I reread the series a while ago, and I was not disappointed. I mean, Brooks is no Tolkien, but the books have held up into my 40's...

I read it way back when, and didn't really like it. I didn't even really have any standards back then. I seem to remember I just found it boring. I understand the second book is kind of where the series takes off, but I'll probably never find out.

Quite pleased to see this turn up.

Elfstones of Shannara was the same price a couple of years ago when that book was adapted for Season 1 of the television series. Season 2 involved some time travel so we did eventually get introduced to Shea and saw a bit of Shady Vale.

I've seen it mentioned quite a few times that the first book was very heavily influenced by The Lord of the Rings, so it's going to be interesting to see just how fair that comparison is. When I get around to it, of course

For me Sword was OK, Elfstones was pretty good, then it pretty much went off a cliff. Though to be fair, in those days we didn't have many good series to choose from..

My memory is that it came across as more D&D influenced than LoTR influenced. The series that I thought was heavily LoTR influenced was Mike Jeffries Road to Underfall and sequels. (That was one book I never finished I hated it that much.)

In all honesty, it's at least 20 years since I last read them; they aren't logged in my LibraryThing catalogue so they must have gone at least 10 years ago as I don't recall unpacking them when I finally moved my books to Cambridge 20 years ago. (I started out in a bedsit, and when I moved into my house, my late mother rather plaintively said 'now you've got your own place, darling, can I have my spare room back?')

I think you mean Mike Jefferies. Unfortunately, for me, they don't appear to be available in ebook.

I tried to read Mike Jefferies at about the same time as I read Terry Brooks (and Mike Jefferies is not available in the UK store either). I was (mostly) referring to Shannara in my post; not having finished the Jefferies I wouldn't have kept it at all, let alone any sequels.

I enjoyed the first Shannara trilogy as an adult. However, I quickly lost interest after those 3.

Octavia E. Butler's Earthseed, the complete series is again on sale for $1.99 at Kobo and Amazon (Canada). It was on sale a while back and I picked it up then but for those who missed that earlier sale.
