Zip files I hope!

Awesome find. And, although I am somewhat of a Metallica fan, my library of their songs is practically non-existent.

Given a choice, I'll almost always take a studio version over a live version of a song. But we weren't given a choice (I'm sure that whoever's responsible for the giveaway has chosen live versions for the very reason that they are not as popular as the studio versions. That means less loss of potential income.)

Has anyone ever noticed that the live version, with no change in lyrics, is usually, if not always, longer than the studio version? Does anyone have any idea why? I'm genuinely asking for information here, not baiting you all.

Longer versions are usually due to extended guitar and/or drum solos.

I've also found many live versions to be shorter because they speed up the tempo. I most thoroughly hate it when they do that.

For the most part, I don't like live versions. Most bands suck at live performances, most notably the Rolling Stones. On the other end, AC/DC is a fantastic live band.

If you speed up the tempo, wouldn't that make a shorter song, rather than a longer one?

I kind of like Rolling Stones' live performances. They bring a lot of humor to their performances by Mike Jagger prancing around all over the stage.

The best live (I saw the recording) performance of a singer and band was one at St. Luke's (I think that it was) in England in 2004. It was of James Brown, his band (largely horns), and two very energetic dancers. Copies of it are (were, at least) on YouTube. It was masterful, in my opinion. His live performances seemed to get better and better through the years, and his untimely passing was such a loss. His amazing dances were gone, for the most part, as you would expect of a 70-year old man. View this performance!

I can't say that I've ever seen an AC/DC performance and, if I have, it was a recording. I'll have to see what I can find on the Internet.

If you are on Naxos Music Group's newsletter mailing list, be sure not to overlook the most recent one. You should have received it yesterday.

Being on their mailing list is what entitles you to receive the first album that they give away each month. You also will have to open the newsletter in order to access the free album.

This free album from Naxos is an interesting one. It is called Spirit of America - U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps. It is a selection of military music pieces (most of which I never remember hearing before) played on--you guessed it--fife and drums.

Freebies galore!

This next freebie is a classical music one, a selection from the Capriccio music publishing company album of excerpts from Franz Schubert's Rosamunde. The album is performed by the Cologne West German Radio Orchestra, with Helmut Froschauer as the conductor. You can find out much more about the album here.

The particular selection from the album that we can get free is a 5 minute, 49 second rendition of Schubert's Vom Mitleiden Maria: Overture. You can stream it, or download it, or do both, if that's what you wish to do, with the piece by navigating to the dedicated webpage for this YourClassical freebie. The place on the webpage to stream the piece should be obvious; the link to click on in order to download the piece may be a little less obvious--it says "Direct MP3 download link."

This piece is one of that kind of classical music which has dramatically rising and falling tempo, and rising and falling volume. I'm sure that you will like this piece if you like that kind of classical music.

Look for the last YourClassical freebie for the M-F week and, yes the year 2016, sometime after 1 a.m. Eastern Time tomorrow morning!

Some bands like Pearl Jam, The Allman Brothers and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band I prefer their live sets over their studio Albums. Pearl Jam tends to toss in a lot of extended album cuts and covers. TAB and ESB let there hair down and stretch out their songs to 20 minute plus epics. I have a bootleg of the ESB in it's prime doing a version of the E Street Shuffle that amply showcases each member of the band talents. It is nearly an hour long.

Naxos music group has a compilation album of 21st Century Cinema Classics, which is a collection of "classical music featured in 66 movies." If you navigate to this Naxos webpage, you can find out much more about the entire album.

Today's free MP3 from YourClassical comes from that album. It is a 30 second (no, I didn't forget to put the number of minutes--that's all that there is of it, 30 seconds!) piece of the great composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Don Giovanni: Champagne Aria.

The YourClassical dedicated webpage for the free piece credits Nicolaus Esterhazy Sinfonia, Bo Skovhus for the baritone part, and Michael Halasz as the conductor. On that same webpage, you can stream and/or download the piece. The stream bar is obvious; the link to directly download the piece is the one labeled, appropriately enough, "Direct MP3 download link."

Aside from being disappointed in the very short length of the piece (unavoidable, however, because that's apparently the way that Mozart wrote it), I actually liked the piece. I imply surprise, because I generally don't care for singing in classical pieces, perhaps especially operatic singing like I suppose baritone parts would be considered. However, the baritone singer (Bo Skovhus) sings it very fast (I'm sure that that's the way that Mozart wrote it--everything that he wrote is fast), and something about that makes it engaging, where the slow baritone pieces somehow end up being grating to listen to. Just my idiosyncrasy. YMMV.

As I mentioned yesterday, this is the last free piece from YourClassical for the week and for 2016. (I feel like breaking out into singing Aude Lang Syne, but I will spare you. ha). I'll plan to be back Monday with a new freebie from YourClassical!

Until January 4th as part of the winter holiday sales, the Moon+ Reader Pro app is 50% off for just $2.49 USD or local equivalent @ the Google Play store, for anyone who happened to get a first-time Android device recently or knows someone who does and might want a decent reading app.

They also sell it in the Amazon appstore, but it doesn't seem to be discounted there. More details about the difference between the free and the paid version can be seen on the official website.
