is there a copy of the Online Etymology Dictionary (etymonline) that exists in a kobo-compatible format? i feel like i’m losing my mind — i could swear i’ve seen posts about this in the past, but i just haven’t been able to find anything using google, kagi, or even this site’s search feature.
i know that various other dictionaries exist with etymologies — the older, 2019 version of OED (which i have installed), the ones from reader-dict.com (which are based on wiktionary) — but etymonline is just so good and detailed. |

Speaking of this, I have tried to convert several Serbian->english dictionaries I have found (some goldendict format, others babylon) to use with the kobo with the use of pyglossary to no avail. The only dictionaries that I can get to seem to work are one that I have bought from reader-dict, or ones that were verified from this thread. (Bulgarian -> eng one from here works great). Any tips or ideas to what I might be doing wrong on the converting end?

You have not provided a link to it. Finding this dictionary was a difficult challenge... I haven't checked, try.

Here is "fictionary" for R. Scott Bakker Prince of Nothing and The Second Apocalypse. It was quite a lot of work to make nice formatting. I scrapped the whole Wikipedia. With some minor information missing. Very powerful dictionary, but be careful could be some spoilers if you read too much of it.

R. Scott Bakker Prince of Nothing R. Scott Bakker The Second Apocalypse For entire series. V2 includes ENTIRE Wikipedia + Full English dictionary. All nicely formatted and optimized for using on Kobo devices. Reason why I added English dictionary is because I got tired of switching between dictionaries. If somebody wants V2 without it, let me know. |

Hello,
I recently bought a Kobo Libra Colour and while its a nice device I cannot get used to the IPA pronunciation of words. I'm American and was taught (what I think is) respelling of the word with American english characters. My old Kindle Oasis dictionary has the non IPA format dictionary but for the life of me I cannot find anything online that is similar to import in to the Kobo. Could anyone please assist? |

Hello
First of all, thank You for a great work. I saw that there is and English - Estonian dictionary. Is there also a possibility to get an Estonian dictionary (for example I read an Estonian language book and want to get clarification on some word is Estonian)? Best regards |

Norwegian dicts
For Norwegians or/and those interested in the Norwegian language, here are dictionaries for Bokmål Norwegian and Norwegian-English (not sure about the quality of the latter, it has been a while since I have used it.)

Ordbøkene
There are dozens of us
![]() I've recently converted the excellent CC licensed (Bokmål and Nynorsk) dictionaries available at https://ordbokene.no/ to formats usable on stock Kobo and on KOReader. You might be interested in that, because they're a good deal more extensive, and also contain morphological information (so that you're shown the entry for the verb finne upon tapping fant in the text): https://github.com/sinic/ordboekene-for-lesebrett |

I appreciate this is a few years old now but I wondered if anyone has made a Thai to English dictionary? I tried convert one from a StartDict file using PyGlossary and it partially works but not for Thai words with tone marks and/or vowells above or below the consonant. Is this even possible or does the format of the Thai script prevent it from being coded the right way to work with Kobo? I've tried using KOReader and the StarDict original dictionary but can't manage to highlight the Thai words, itis only able to highlight a whole line of text. I assume this is because there aren't spaces in the Thai script. Also, for the English to Thai dictionary, I tried to install a patch to update the dictionary font but the patch creator I used (kobopatch_4.38.23684_v1) said that only 4 scripts are supported with the current Kobo software, none of which display Thai characters. Is anyone aware of another patch that supports a change to the dictionary script in the current software? Thanks in advance! |
