A little warmer, a little more humid. We're not supposed to get rain for another day or so.

On a more serious note, in a camp ground on the nearby Eastern Shore, two people were killed today and about ten suffered injuries when an apparent tornado came through.

Sunny and hot, but not too humid. I'll be "suiting up" (bucket hat, MP3 player, work gloves) to battle more wisteria, soon. I pull yards of vines out of the dirt, and I swear I can see the old vines writhing in the sun, trying to put roots into the pavement, while new vines speed through the vinca to replace them!

I'll be 'suiting up' (straw hat, light cotton pants & shirt, work gloves) as soon as the sun goes down - to mow the lawn & trim stuff while it's still below 90 F!

What meteorological phenomenon (phenomena) affects you this day ?
Hot and humid with the possibility of more storms later today. All morning I've been draining Lake Doubyatee from the fenced in area behind out house where our above ground pool used to stand. The ground is so saturated that it's taking longer than usual. I cut the grass in the fenced in area a couple of days ago but didn't touch the grass outside the fence. It's not all that high, but if the ground gets dry enough before day's end and there are no showers, I'll get on the lawn tractor and listen to some audiobooks on my iPod.

Just before supper, I got the grass cut to the tune of "Gooseberries" by Anton Chekhov (part of a short story collection I'm listening to on my iPod). Came back in drenched in sweat. It wasn't quite 90°, but it was close, and the humidity's at about the halfway point. Also got through most of "A Hunger Artist" by Franz Kafka from the same collection (I have a large yard, and I also cut the median strip in our court). And, yes, tomorrow promises to be, as pooh's already mentioned, even hotter and more humid.

Indeed! I waited until after sundown to take my nightly walk - it's still 87 F at 8 pm!
[Luckily I mowed the lawn Friday night - when temps were still in the low 80's F] |

It's raining today with the occasional thunderstorm. About two hours ago it was raining so hard that I had to distribute towels around the house. There are several places where when it rains really hard the guttering can't handle the amount of water (the drawbacks of a house that's several centuries old).
Around the country streets are filled with water. And inn Alphen aan de Rijn 110 millimetres of rain feel in just 12 hours. The dyke there is threatening to break. There is promise of more rain, hopefully not this much in such a short time. Last edited by Rumpelteazer; 07-28-2014 at 08:46 AM. |

A lot of rain fell today.
A neighbour took the following picture of the canal: Spoiler:
The water is right up to the edge of the wharfs. Normally the water is a meter or more lower than this! Luckily it quickly went down again and now it's a foot lower than normal. This video was taken at the nearby shopper centre, which has developed a waterfall. Spoiler:

Well, it seems the jet stream has unexpectedly dipped south and allowed some cooler, less humid air to flow SE from Canada ... beautiful today .... predictions claim no temps over 90 F for at least a week!
This is highly abnormal summer weather for NC - usually we have uninterrupted weeks/months of 90+F temps with >90% humidity levels. I think this is the same weather pattern (courtesy of the polar vortex and a wandering jet stream) that funneled snow & bitter cold fronts once a week during the winter into the SE. If so, we're doomed this winter! |
