Very nice. My last project was the Flying Geese Gansey by Alice Starmore. Authentic Guernsey 5-ply wool, and US#1 needles.

I feel like I should savor the last half of ADwD because once its over, who knows how many years it will be before there's more. I may just start over on book 1, although maybe not immediately. I do want to reread the story though.

I just finished Steven King's 11/22/63. I am not a big King fan (although I like his non-horror stuff such as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me), but after hearing recommendations about 11/22/63, I decided to try it and I liked it quite a bit. Although I was just a kid, I remember 1963 so I enjoyed the descriptions of that era as well as the story.

Next up is The Hunger Games Trilogy. I want to read it before seeing the movie.

I just finished (and enjoyed) Jennifer 8. Lee's "The Fortune Cookie Chronicles - Adventures in the World of Chinese Food".

Quote:
Readers will take an unexpected and entertaining journey—through culinary, social and cultural history—in this delightful first book on the origins of the customary after-Chinese-dinner treat by New York Times reporter Lee. When a large number of Powerball winners in a 2005 drawing revealed that mass-printed paper fortunes were to blame, the author (whose middle initial is Chinese for prosperity) went in search of the backstory. She tracked the winners down to Chinese restaurants all over America, and the paper slips the fortunes are written on back to a Brooklyn company. This travellike narrative serves as the spine of her cultural history—not a book on Chinese cuisine, but the Chinese food of take-out-and-delivery—and permits her to frequently but safely wander off into various tangents related to the cookie. There are satisfying minihistories on the relationship between Jews and Chinese food and a biography of the real General Tso, but Lee also pries open factoids and tidbits of American culture that eventually touch on large social and cultural subjects such as identity, immigration and nutrition. Copious research backs her many lively anecdotes, and being American-born Chinese yet willing to scrutinize herself as much as her objectives, she wins the reader over. Like the numbers on those lottery fortunes, the book's a winner.

Very humorous and witty. Laughed out loud several times disturbing the sleeping cat. Unique murders (death by Levi 501s) and nice character development of dysfunctional individuals. The author's complaints and concerns regarding Florida's future is patently and purposely obvious. Fast enjoyable read. Solid C [3 stars].

Next is Ngaio Marsh's A Man Lay Dead. One of her first written in 1934.

Thanks a lot, very useful.
Last night I decided to read biography of Steve Jobs by W.Isaacson. Will buy it today I guess.

I wanted to say it for a while already but a new thread is not worth it - or was done before... what a pleasure for me it is to be among people who like to read as much as me (and more) and who cannot live without a book and reading and who understand the feeling! Add to this love for shiny gadgets and I'm in heaven Very enriching for me. Thanks everyone for being there.

Couldn't agree more, Don. And were it not for MobileRead and its members, I would have never found what are now some of my favourite authors.

Currently reading: Faro's Daughter by Georgette Heyer. I'd started to read the first Inspector Banks book by Peter Robinson, but kept getting interrupted and couldn't get into it. So I put it away for a bit and picked up a book I know will keep me going. I still want to give Robinson a chance, so I'll push it down the list a bit and come back when I know I have a couple of days to spend with it.

Just finished "reading" Restless in the Grave by Dana Stabenow, read by Marguerite Gavin. I have the book on my Kindle as well, but I have always enjoyed the Gavin readings of her books, and decided to let my first reading of it be an audio one.

Restless in the Grave is the 19th and latest Kate Shugak mystery, with a twist -- it includes Liam Campbell as well from her other Alaskan series. As with all of Stabenow's books, Alaska is front and center. Alaskan people, Alaskan natives and incomers, and the state itself are very much what the book is about. An excellent book and very well read by Ms. Gavin. 5 stars whether you read it or listen to it.

Strange coincidence, I started Gallows View a couple of weeks ago, but bookclub deadlines were looming, so I left it to read The Bell Jar, The Remains of the Day, and The Pickwick Papers. I forgot about the Peter Robinson book and went on to Jeffrey Eugenides' The Marriage Plot. Thanks for the reminder, I need to finish it up this weekend, before the library loan expires.

I recently read The Half-Finished Heaven by Tomas Tranströmer (collection of Tranströmer's work translated by Robert Bly). I would say that the Nobel Prize committee made a wise choice in selection of Tranströmer for the Literature Prize in 2011. A sample:

Quote:
After a Death

Once there was a shock
that left behind a long, shimmering comet tail.
It keeps us inside. It makes the TV pictures snowy.
It settles in cold drops on the telephone wires.

One can still go slowly on skis in the winter sun through brush where a few leaves hang on.
They resemble pages torn from old telephone directories.
Names swallowed by the cold.

It is still beautiful to hear the heart beat
but often the shadow seems more real than the body.
The samurai looks insignificant
beside his armor of black dragon scales.
Just started The Night Life of the Gods by Thorne Smith. So far it is very funny.

I finished Steven Lyle Jordan's _Evoguia_. I would rate it a 2.5 of 5 stars.

I found the concept of the story interesting. However, I thought there were a few problems.

First, the character development just wasn't there. When some characters died I just didn't care. Granted, they were minor characters.

Next, The conflict in the book was anemic. Everything was resolved so simply.

Finally, The dialog was pretty weak. That's just not how people talk or how politicians interact.

It seemed that the writing was not consistent and I think in the Authors notes at the end this was explained. Apparently this was one of his early works that he polished up and re-released. I guess it shows. The book just wasn't up to the standards I found in Verdant Skys or Berserker.

---

Next I started reading _The Drowning_ by Richard Herley. I think this is his newest. I always enjoy his books and glad the MobileRead Book Club introduced me to him via _Refuge_... a book I highly recommend.

I've read half of A Farewell To Arms

The below doesn't contain any plot wrecking spoilers, the book is written like a biography. So there isn't much of a "Plot"

Spoiler:
I think the dialogue between Catherine and the guy that we're following (I don't think we know his name) is pretty corny, Darling this, and Darling that. Not very realistic, everything else is pretty good though.
