$2.95 -- The Only Street in Paris -- Elaine Sciolino/ Elaine Sciolino --> 8.0 hrs/ R-4.0 --> memoir

Quote:
The Only Street in Paris: Life on the Rue Des Martyrs

Whispersync: the Audible book is $2.95, if you own or borrow the Kindle ebook ($9.32)

Elaine Sciolino, the former Paris bureau chief of The New York Times, invites us on a tour of her favorite Parisian street, offering an homage to street life and the pleasures of Parisian living. While many cities suffer from the leveling effects of globalization, the rue des Martyrs maintains its distinct allure. On this street, the patron saint of France was beheaded and the Jesuits took their first vows. It was here that Edgar Degas and Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted circus acrobats, Emile Zola situated a lesbian dinner club in his novel Nana, and François Truffaut filmed scenes from The 400 Blows. Sciolino reveals the charms and idiosyncrasies of this street and its longtime residents - the Tunisian greengrocer, the husband-and-wife cheesemongers, the showman who's been running a transvestite cabaret for more than half a century, the owner of a 100-year-old bookstore, the woman who repairs 18th-century mercury barometers - bringing Paris alive in all of its unique majesty. The Only Street in Paris will make listeners hungry for Paris, for cheese and wine, and for the kind of street life that is all too quickly disappearing.

$3.95 -- The Argonauts -- Maggie Nelson/ Maggie Nelson --> 4.8 hrs/ R-4.5 --> memoir

Quote:
Whispersync: the Audible book is $3.99, if you own or borrow the Kindle ebook ($9.99)

An intrepid voyage out to the frontiers of the latest thinking about love, language, and family.

Maggie Nelson's The Argonauts is a genre-bending memoir, a work of "autotheory" offering fresh, fierce, and timely thinking about desire, identity, and the limitations and possibilities of love and language. At its center is a romance: the story of the author's relationship with the artist Harry Dodge. This story, which includes Nelson's account of falling in love with Dodge, who is fluidly gendered, as well as her journey to and through a pregnancy, is an intimate portrayal of the complexities and joys of (queer) family making.

Writing in the spirit of public intellectuals such as Susan Sontag and Roland Barthes, Nelson binds her personal experience to a rigorous exploration of what iconic theorists have said about sexuality, gender, and the vexed institutions of marriage and child-rearing. Nelson's insistence on radical individual freedom and the value of caretaking becomes the rallying cry of this thoughtful, unabashed, uncompromising book.

FREE -- Adventures of Tom Stranger -- Larry Correia/ A Baldwin --> 2.1 hrs --> sci-fi --> details

Quote:
The Adventures of Tom Stranger, Interdimensional Insurance Agent

Have you ever seen a planet invaded by rampaging space mutants from another dimension or Nazi dinosaurs from the future? Don't let this happen to you! Rifts happen, so you should be ready when universes collide. A policy with Stranger & Stranger can cover all of your interdimensional insurance needs. Rated "Number One in Customer Satisfaction" for three years running, no claim is too big or too weird for Tom Stranger to handle. But now Tom faces his greatest challenge yet. Despite being assigned the wrong - and woefully inadequate - intern, Tom must still provide quality customer service to multiple alternate Earths, all while battling tentacle monsters, legions of the damned, an evil call center in Nebraska, and his archnemesis, Jeff Conundrum. Armed with his Combat Wombat and a sense of fair play, can Tom survive? And will Jimmy the Intern ever discover his inner insurance agent? It's time to kick ass and adjust claims.

Adam Baldwin (Firefly, Chuck) performs Larry Correia's madcap interdimensional tale of underwriting and space travel, where the only thing scarier than tentacle monsters is a high deductible.

I've never bought a NOOK audiobook. Do they require using a proprietary player?

I pulled up several of the books there and checked - some have the Play button and others do not. Don't know if that is accidental or if some publishers are blocking it. However, it did seem as if the ones I got free did not have a Play option (you'd think if they were blocking one of the two, it would be the download, but no!).
Thanks. I noticed that the three I books I "bought"--using free promo credits--do have the streaming option, but none of the others (all freebies) do. Very odd indeed.

Yes, though it's double work, I've found it useful to organize my audiobooks (and videos) in Calibre (as "empty books" with metadata only) and in MediaMonkey.

$1.99 -- Mr Splitfoot -- Samantha Hunt/ multiple --> 11.4 hrs/ R-4.0 --> gothic

Quote:
Whispersync: the Audible book is $3.99, if you own or borrow the Kindle ebook ($2.99)

A contemporary gothic from an author in the company of Kelly Link and Aimee Bender, Mr. Splitfoot tracks two women in two times as they march toward a mysterious reckoning.

Ruth and Nat are orphans, packed into a house full of abandoned children run by a religious fanatic. To entertain their siblings, they channel the dead. Decades later, Ruth’s niece Cora finds herself accidentally pregnant. After years of absence, Aunt Ruth appears, mute and full of intention. She is on a mysterious mission, leading Cora on an odyssey across the entire state of New York on foot. Where is Ruth taking them? Where has she been? And who—or what—has she hidden in the woods at the end of the road?

In an ingeniously structured dual narrative, two separate timelines move toward the same point of crisis. Their merging will upend and reinvent the whole. A subversive ghost story that is carefully plotted and elegantly constructed, Mr. Splitfoot will set your heart racing and your brain churning. Mysteries abound, criminals roam free, utopian communities show their age, and the mundane world intrudes on the supernatural—and vice versa.

$3.95 -- The Martian Chronicles -- Ray Bradbury/ Stephen Hoye --> 9.2 hrs/ R-4.0 --> sci-fi

Quote:
Whispersync: the Audible book is $3.49, if you own or borrow the Kindle ebook ($11.49)

Like Fahrenheit 451 and The Illustrated Man, The Martian Chronicles transcends the genre of science fiction to become a twentieth-century classic.

Leaving behind a world on the brink of destruction, man came to the red planet and found the Martians waiting, dreamlike. Seeking the promise of a new beginning, man brought with him his oldest fears and his deepest desires. Man conquered Mars—and in that instant, Mars conquered him. The strange new world with its ancient, dying race and vast, red-gold deserts cast a spell on him, settled into his dreams, and changed him forever.

In connected, chronological stories, a true grandmaster enthralls, delights, and challenges us with his vision, starkly and stunningly exposing our strength, our weakness, our folly, and our poignant humanity on a strange and breathtaking world where humanity does not belong.

I have been using spreadsheets. I've managed to keep up fairly well with the audiobooks, but the e-books are a mess. It would be nice to have everything in one place.

I received a response from Audiobooks.com. The code was a marketing tool used for tracking purposes and not intended to offer an additional free book to anyone. So much for assuming that it was for an additional book on my part.

My experience in dealing with Audiobooks.com over this matter has shown that they have excellent customer service.

I started out with spreadsheets, too; even considered upgrading to Access Database. However, I'm glad I switched to Calibre, instead. It's much more feature-rich and versatile than spreadsheets, more user-friendly than Access, and works seamlessly with Calibre Companion and Dropbox.
