Finished The Sparrow. The writing was excellent, but the last half of the book was a bit too "finding God" for my taste and the ending didn't surprise me. It was worth reading for the fascinating characters and the suspense leading up to the encounters on the planet. I liked the narrative voices the author used and the double perspective of the two timelines in the story.

Thanks for the feedback. Will help set my expectations when I get around to reading it.

I'm reading Hypothermia by Arnaldur Indridason. Barriing some possibly jarring translation, it's terrific.

Well, I was impressed. A very good story indeed, and an absolutely splendid last line. It made me remember why I like his work, while some of the later Pip & Flinx books made me forget!

Next Up: Marsbound by Joe Haldeman. I bought this back in December 2009 along with a pre-order for the sequel. I'd forgotten about the sequel! Now downloaded and added to my TBR pile. It seems that there's a third one too, but not available in ebook format in the UK yet. Hmm... hopefully the novels will be fairly self-contained!

I finished Harbour. It was a really good book - but it felt heavy going at the same time. While 512 pages isn't a huge number, it's really a large number of back-stories that help slowly reveal the mystery of the story. It seemed to take me a long time to get through it - but was definitely worth it. 4 stars from me.

To be honest, what actually shocked me the most was Boromir's characterisation. He was a lot more valient and honorouble in the book as compared to the movie, which made his fall all the more heart-rending. I couldn't read though that part; it was too painful. But I have to admit, he ended up being my favourite character after reading the book.

It was similar to what happened to me when Eddard Stark in A Game of Thrones died. The rest of the book passed in such a blur that I barely paid attention to what happened, so I'm still a bit iffy on what happened next. I guess I will have to re-read the book. And oh gosh, I was reading about Boromir right after Eddard Stark and now my heart feels pained.

Speaking of Eddard Stark, I'm now on the second book in the Ice and Fire series; A Clash of Kings. So far, it's been really good, and I really want to know what happens next. Will definitely be sticking to this series like glue. I especially want to follow Sansa's storyline; she's my favourite character, and I relate to her the most out of all the characters.

That one is coming up soon in my TBR pile, and I'm looking forward to getting into it.

Just finishing up Other People's Money by Justin Cartwright. Have been reading several titles lately about the financial crisis, but this is the first novel on the subject/period. Very good story.

Next, I suppose I'll start The Help. Everyone here in France has been raving about it, but I'm a bit wary from some reviews I've read that it's maybe a little too "light" a treatment of a serious topic. But we'll see.

I finished The Leaping, it was ok but nowhere near as good as I wanted it to be.

I've now started The Little Stranger and am really liking it so far and I'm only 60 pages into it so far.

I love the Paks-series, I went to Elisabeth Moon's site straight away to check. Good to know a new book is coming really soon (February 2012). I should re-read the last since it's been a while, not sure if I remember everything that went on.

Yes, I'm currently re-reading the first two books in this series, in preparation for the new one. There's too many things I don't remember from the earlier books.

History month (sort of).

Picked up the three World War 2 books of Cornelius Ryan (The Longest Day, A Bridge Too Far and The Last Battle) and am working my way through them. The Longest Day was a quick and enjoyable read and I'm nearly 10% into A Bridge Too Far.

Also parallel re-reading Joe Abercrombie's The Blade Itself with plans to finish the next two in the First Law series.

Oh, I really enjoyed "The bridge too far". An amazing concept that turned out to be better on paper then in reality. The movie is pretty good too.

I also enjoyed the First Law series. I started it on a whim and the first book was way better then I had expected.

I have never read Mr. Ryan's books but he does get you into the story. So far I'm not disappointed.

I read the first of the "The First Law" series a while ago, but I recently picked up books 2 and 3 and decided to re-read book 1 and then continue on with the rest of the series. Definitely not your typical fantasy sword and sorcery story.

JKR said Book 4 is a pivotal book with critical info to the plot line. It was a good one too.

I'd rather read them as eBooks as well, maybe they'll be available as Ebooks by the next time around. But since I have the hardbacks and they are reading just fine, they'll just have to do (since Pottermore is dragging its collective feet). I'd forgotten just how full of important story arc info it was. I've enjoyed this reading immensely and am now done and on to Year 5, Order of the Phoenix!
