We've got close to a foot and it's still snowing. At least it's dry powder. The temperature is now 12° F. The latest forecast I saw for us predicts we won't get above freezing for a week and a half, at least! Last edited by cromag; 01-21-2014 at 10:38 PM. |

I was just looking at the temps for tomorrow. I was wrong about the lower 30s. From what I'm seeing, we won't get out of the 20s.

Our weather only gradually changes. Currently our days are 25*c/80*f and sunny.
I hope everyone with snow stays warm and dry! |

We've had a weather miracle! .... of sorts ....
When I went to bed, we were getting a steady rain/snow mix that was freezing onto surfaces. I dreaded thinking of having to chip my car out tomorrow morning from its icy cocoon. Temps were not plunging as predicted .... When I got up, I cautiously peeked out, expecting to find a skating rink in my driveway. Instead ... it was dry! My car had no ice on the windshield! The roads were dry! But it WAS cold! 22 F with a wind chill of 5 F! Apparently the cloud cover kept the temps above the teens, and the air mass was SO dry that the moisture was sucked back into the atmosphere and did not freeze on the ground! I safely drove to work, avoiding the stray frozen puddle. Tonight, another arctic air mass arrives, dropping temps down into the teens! Yikes! |

My AccuWeather app says the current temperature in Chesapeake is 19 degrees Fahrenheit. I find that hard to believe. It doesn't feel that cold, and much of the sidewalk and driveway was clearing up even before I began to shovel. It. looks to me like about 2-3 inches of snow on the ground. I haven't heard an official talley, but here's a picture from our front yard this morning:

Norton and Crystal both went swimming in the frozen over lake where our swimming pool used to be. Crystal broke through the ice first, then Norton followed. Naturally, the first thing Norton did when he came back in was to jump in my lap and soak my pants clean through to my underwear. Yay, Norton. Thanks a lot, buddy.

The extremely cold winter that we have experienced to date has some good points. The Apostle Islands Sea Caves are accessible for the first time in five years. To reach them the surrounding ice on Lake Superior must be frozen solid enough to allow people to safely walk the mile and a half on the ice to the caves.

The sun was so bright today that even polarized sunglasses weren't much help. Still, I was able to shovel a walking path about halfway up the driveway. Not the full width of the driveway, just wide enough to walk.
I prefer shovelling in the dark, anyway. I'll get the rest of the path done tonight, then widen it out tomorrow to clear the driveway. t's not fun, of course, but it could be worse. As deep as it is, it's still pretty powdery and light. And this time of year the sun shines more directly on our paved driveway -- it's on the south west side of a ridge and gets direct sun from about 10 AM to sunset this time of year. |

Yes, as you can maybe see there was a lot of snow cover on top of much of the ice and the sky conditions was overcast with clouds. When the ice is free of snow and the sky is clear with bright sun it is really impressive, like a fantasy cave of clear crystal. One can see through the clear ice to the lake bottom.

I finished shoveling the driveway -- well, the slope, anyway. I haven't shoveled the flat part at the bottom, but there's really no need -- we have a commercial dumpster there. We had our old backyard deck torn down (way overdue) and the new one is almost done. They should have been done on Monday, the day before the big snow, but two pieces of the hand rail were damaged in shipment. In the immortal words of Maxwell Smart: "Missed it by that much!"
The really sad part, for them, anyway, is that they don't get the final check until it's completely done. More cold tonight and tomorrow, so the snow won't be melting anytime soon. |

After a frosty start. bright with an almost full cover of upper-level clouds. A weak sun trying to shine through.

Very bright; very sunny; very, very cold.
This is the kind of day that polarized sunglasses were invented for. |
