Kobo Discounts: Coupon Codes + Discussion

I'm sick and tired of Kobo's parochial bias towards a few English speaking countries.

How do you think that the accounts that are receiving the 'refer a friend' emails are being selected?

Only my UK account has received the email.

So has anyone of you received the email to more than one account? Or accounts in different countries?

As far as I can tell the various country websites don't have info on this promo.

Thanks to Lynx-lynx and ChandaK562 I managed to get a couple of 90% off codes , and I can confirm that only one 90% code will work per account.

They also definitely seem to note whether this was your first purchase ever, and I would guess they use this to determine whether to send a 90% code back to the referrer?

After one of my purchases, there was actually a banner for the refer a friend promo (on the U.S. site), but this link also didn't work from South Africa - it was similar to those previously posted.

I referred three dummy emails, and was able to use one of the codes on my main account. The other two don't appear to work, so I guess they will have to be used by fresh accounts.

Apparently you can only use one code per account.

You can use the codes on any account provided you buy in one of the authorised countries: UK CA US AUS NZ.

Surely you must be able to use more than one returned code? I can understand the new user codes only working once per account, but the referring account is supposed to get a code back if the new user uses their code, and surely the whole idea is that you refer as many people as you can? I haven't had any reciprocated codes to try that.

I'm not sure I'm motivated enough to create new accounts for my dummy emails.

I know I'm not. It's easier just to refer a different email.

I never expected to see a widespread 90% coupon again, so I was wrong about that. But what's interesting to me is that Kobo is getting much smarter about codes. Not just the one per account aspect which is a no-brainer, but they're finally verifying locations to an extent to exclude people and the coupons are only visible in emails instead of being generated on the web page. Those are monumental changes. The party's winding down at Kobo.

Still, for what it's worth, I read this promotion for Kobo's being shocked that the monthly contests aren't generating the business they used to. They're the only ones shocked. It is bizarre to run this promotion at the same time as the monthly contest.

I don't follow you. That's not working for me. I referred three email accounts, got three 90% off codes, and have only been able to use one of them.

Which is a little bit of a relief, to be honest, or I don't know when I would have stopped.

I must have misunderstood you. I thought you meant that you weren't getting the second referral code after a purchase had been made, presumably because the purchase was not from a new customer. I've used three codes on three different accounts, but haven't got any follow-up codes; however, I already had the accounts, from back in the country-hoppng days when it was easier to open a new account so I didn't have to keep re-entering my payment info.

So I'm sorry; if you don't have another account or two lying around already, you do have to open a new one anyway. But at least that should result in two useful codes.

I'll chime in with my experience (I'm in the US). I received two refer a friend emails (one for each of the two Kobo accounts I had set up). I used one my accounts to refer three other email addresses I use (all on @iCloud domain). I received all three emails immediately and used all three by setting up new Kobo accounts for each of the three new emails. I have yet to receive a 90% code back at my original referring email.

If someone wants me to refer them, let me know.

So I guess I should still keep playing the contest then. I don't think I want to create a bunch of new KOBO accounts and I have about 10 more books to buy. I have a 65 and 2 55 I can use multi tab, so I still like 2 more codes.
