If anyone cares to know, I figured out that I must not have done the steps necessary, earlier, to be a real member at Audiobooks.com. Just for kicks, I clicked on a "Start Free Trial" button on one of their webpages. Then I got a webpage letting me know that it had been successful. I've got one free credit showing in my account, and everything!

So . . . . I'm wondering if it is even necessary to use a code to get the free one-month trial with a free audiobook. It seems like I just did it--there was no evidence that they still had SWIMGUIDE connected with me, anymore. On this webpage, Audiobooks.com seems to offer that free trial without the necessity of using a code. I quote:

There's nothing about needing any code. Is that what it sounds like to you guys?

BTW--after I signed up, the "your account" webpage showed up. It had the cancel link that I couldn't find before. That probably occurred because I am now a full-fledged member, where I wasn't before. Imagine that, you have to be a member in order to cancel your membership.

So, I'm going to give a try to the suggestions that two or three of you made, to see if I can listen to one of their audiobooks without using Android or Apple iOS.

RE: #1--I'm really sorry #1 seems to require you to already have the audiobook downloaded to an app! I mistakenly thought this would solve the problem.

RE: #2--Yes, I get that. Naughty misbehaving Android device! Any chance you could borrow a NOOK from your public library or buy a cheapo Android device (like one of these), to use 'til you repair or replace your preferred device?

RE: #3--This option relies on your having downloaded the mp3 files to the Audiobooks.com app, so you could then copy them to your computer or some storage medium. (I called this mobile device-to-computer copying "reverse sideloading", because the term "sideloading" often refers to computer-to-mobile device copying.) However - regretfully - if #2 doesn't work, then #3 won't, either.

IIRC, if you own the audiobook, when you play the book from a web browser, it plays a few minutes as a preview but then it asks if you want to continue listening. If you continue, it will play until the end.

It's been a while since I tried that, but that how I remember it working.

Thanks to both of you for your help.

No problem about the failure of the suggestions to work. I just appreciate you trying to help. I don't think that the problem is with my Android device or the Android OS, per se, but just some convoluted way that LG has the operation of the phone set up. I emailed their technical department two or three months ago, and got a response, but I couldn't figure out exactly what they were saying. I just set the phone aside until I had more time to work on the problem. I don't have any cellular phone service on it right now, so it's not too big of a deal.

I tried playing the sample again. For some reason, even after I clicked on "continue" after the sample was over, it wouldn't continue--it went back to the 3-minute sample again. Finally, after I played around with it some, the counter showed the full 5 hours+ playing time, and I was in business. I hope that I can remember, the next time that I try, what I did, or am able to duplicate it. Or, better yet, maybe the issue won't show up again. IMHO, that procedure is really an asinine way of doing things. When I get the Android phone problem fixed, I'll try the sideloading/transferring thing.

Thanks, I think. I just dropped $10 at Audible yesterday and I didn't really need to be spending any more for audiobooks for a while. But I can't resist a great sale . . . .

A piece of trivia: "lounge" is the correct word for what Amazon wants to say. However, I recently found out that "chaise lounge" is incorrect--it is, correctly, "chaise longue." No kidding. Which prompts the question: if you're kicking back and relaxing in your chaise longue are you lounging or longuing (or longueing, as the case may be)?

A little bit of a change of plans . . . . I'm going to post the Whispersync deals in dribs and drabs, as I run across them. In part, this is due to a recognition on my part that marked down Kindle ebooks might go up in price before I could have put them in the list.

A second change is that I will post Whispersync deals up to $6.00. Some MobileReaders might be willing to pay an extra $1.05 in order to have the ebook or ebook with syncing benefit.

Most of the audiobooks this time appear to be non-fiction. That's a refreshing situation, IMHO. Also, the audiobooks appear to be based upon high-quality ebooks. That has not always been the case in similar Audible sales.
