I'm listening, at this moment, to the most recent MP3 classical music giveaway from Classical-music.com. I got word late this afternoon that it had been posted on their website.
It is a vocal piece. I am going to go out on a limb and say that it is four-part harmony. It is 3 minutes and 8 seconds in length. It is performed by the vocal group Concert Clemens. Carsten Seyer-Hansen is also credited, on the album, with performance of some kind, but I do not know if she actually performs at any place on the particular piece that we can get free. The free piece is 'Es ist ein Ros' entsprugen, and is taken from an album called There Is No Rose: Christmas in the 21st Century. It apparently is published by a company called Orchid Classics; alternatively, Orchid Classics may be the name of a series of albums published by a music-publishing company with a different name. I just don't know. The piece was created in the 16th century. It has been arranged (in the modern day, however, I assume) by one Paul Hillier. "The recording [I assume that this means the piece, not the entire album, but I'm not sure, G] received a five-star review in the Christmas [edition?] of BBC Music Magazine," it is stated in the short description of the piece provided on Classical-music.com's dedicated webpage for the piece/download. Probably not coincidentally to us receiving an offer for this particular piece, "the official website of BBC Music Magazine" is Classical-music.com. Classical-music.com does require you to have an account in order to download their freebies. If you navigate to this webpage and do not see a bright red button, saying "download now," partially covering the thumbnail of the album cover, that means that you need to log in if you already have an account established. If you don't have an account yet, but want to download the free piece, no worries. You can set up an account and then come back to this webpage to download the piece, after you've logged in for the first time. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 12-08-2016 at 09:32 PM. |

Today's free YourClassical piece is a rendition of Deck the Hall. The piece is only 47 seconds long.
Despite the fact that it is a traditional Christmas song and it's only 47 seconds long, there's a ton of information about it on YourClassical's dedicated webpage for the free piece. I'm feeling like I'm obligated to share much of it, whether it is helpful or not. The album cover identifies this as a Naxos album in their "American Classics" series. Here's the rest of what is said on the album cover: "Bruce Adolphe - Chopin Dreams - Seven Thoughts Considered as Music - Piano Puzzlers - Carlo Grante, Piano." About the only thing that I could take away from that is that Carlo Grante plays the piano. The dedicated Naxos webpage for the album is a little help. The album description says this: Composer, educator, performer and author Bruce Adolphe has a close affinity with the piano, and he acknowledges the transformative influence of Chopin on the way the instrument has been perceived up until the present day. Chopin Dreams places the Romantic master firmly into modern times, building on his models and imagining him as a jazz pianist or exploring what he might have played at a bar mitzvah. The Piano Puzzlers take Chopin’s style and mix it into what Dick Hyman has called ‘the wittiest and funniest musical parodies imaginable.’ Seven Thoughts Considered as Music are deeply personal and philosophical musical reactions to inspirational thoughts by the great minds of Emerson, Kafka, Rilke, Chief Seattle, Novalis, Heraclitus, and Shankara. And there's other stuff that you can peruse and read on that webpage. My opinion about the piece? Someone has taken a nice song and messed it up. It sounds like a jazz piece to me. Deck the Hall is not a jazz song, and it shouldn't sound like one! I feel about the same way as I did when I heard Aretha Franklin butcher the National Anthem at an NFL game last weekend, by dragging the two minute song into about an eight minute one. However, if you don't believe me or you're a glutton for punishment, you can listen to it by clicking on the stream bar on this webpage. If you want to download it, click on "Direct MP3 download link," located on the same webpage. As for me, I'm going and deleting this piece of work from my hard drive, right now . . . . Oh, I guess I should mention that this is the last YourClassical free piece for the week. If they're going to offer us more pieces like this one, I wouldn't care if it was the last. It seems like Microsoft must be making a conscious effort lately to offer better promotions. Google Play used to have super deals, but it seems like they have tapered off lately. I keep checking them, though. |

Naxos has sent out its regular newsletter to subscribers and, if you're a subscriber, I would expect that you have it in your email inbox now. With this newsletter, we get an offer of one of three complete albums, free.
Here are the choices: Fry: Santa Claus Symphony / Niagara Symphony Tchaikovsky: Ballet Suites (Transcriptions for Piano 4 Hands) Handel: Messiah (Highlights) The procedure to see the choices, and to receive information about them, is simple enough. Open the message. Scroll down to nearly the bottom of the page; if your email program truncates messages, do what you need to do to see the complete page. You'll see thumbnails of album covers, with descriptions to the right of those albums. Immediately after that, you should see a yellowish button that says, "Click Here to Make and Receive Your Choice". Click on it. You'll be taken to a webpage which contains additional information about each album and, on that webpage you'll have an opportunity to make your selection. As always, Naxos kindly provides the albums in the high-quality flac format (in fact, they give no other choices). If anyone from Naxos happens to be reading this post (extremely unlikely, I'd say, but who knows?), I would like to express appreciation to you. For you to offer a complete free album, especially of the quality of these, is truly generous of you. Thank you! Now, for the tough part--deciding which one of the fine free albums to choose! I've heard seemingly conflicting reports about the following. I have heard that if you are not on the Naxos mailing list by the time that they send out a newsletter, it will be too late for you to take advantage of the free album offer (they make another free album offer (no choices provided--take it or leave it) a week or so prior to this one, which anyone can take advantage of). But, I've also heard that sometimes a person can sign up right after the newsletter is sent out, get the newsletter, and still get in on the month's deal. I don't know which one is correct. If someone has a definitive answer, please share it with us. If you're not a subscriber, the Naxos homepage seems to be as good as any place on their website to sign up. |

Some enlightening information (both of these have dedicated discography articles) at Wikipedia about Stefani and Halsey. Only three singles from Stefani's album charted at all. The highest position on any chart in any country for a single from that album was 52 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gwen_Stefani_discography). Halsey had only three singles from her album to chart, too. However, they did quite better. One ranked as high as #18 (U.S. Alternative chart) and the lowest ranking was 37 (in Germany) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halsey_discography). Of course, people have different tastes in music, and different ideas about what sounds good. |

A scan using McAfee flagged it as a threat. However, I've had McAfee flag apparently safe sites as risky, before, when they weren't. Neither WOT (Web Of Trust) or Avast have flagged the site. As mentioned, I have used this site and its sister sites for years, with no issues whatsoever (I've primarily used the main website--freeprintable.net). All of them are owned by Savetz Publishing, a company which gives all indications of being on the up-and-up/safe. I guess that it's better to have a safe site flagged as unsafe, than not to be warned about an unsafe site. However, my confidence in McAfee is flagging (pun intended) and I'm close to uninstalling it altogether. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 12-10-2016 at 09:28 PM. |
