Geology of Middle-earth: The path of the Fellowship from a geoscientific point of view by Frederic Klimm and Benjamin Loffler

From the rolling landscape of The Shire over the rocky Weather Hills to the
snow-capped peaks of the Misty Mountains, from the extensive forests of
Fangorn and Lorien via the mighty river Anduin down the whooshing Rauros
falls into the Dead Marshes, from the fertile southern shore of Gondor over
the White Mountains into the volcanic plateau of Gorgoroth in Mordor: J.R.R.
Tolkien´s epic trilogy "The Lord of the Rings" leads us into the
geographically diversified, fictional world of Middle-earth.

We will take you on a trip through Middle-earth and accompany the Fellowship of the Ring anew from a completely different perspective: the perspective of a geologist.

Fair warning, this book (so far; I'm only about 2% in) is in want of an editor: misuse/misapplication of words, grammatical issues, etc... it reads like a high school (or perhaps junior college) term paper.

Saying that, so far it looks like a decently researched paper-- if these are high school students, they have done well for themselves.

I've just had a price alert from eReaderIQ for Invasion, the sixth book in the Walking Dead novel series.

Currently £1.19 at amazon.co.uk. Cheapest it's been to date.

Just noticed that a few more Dean Koontz novels are down to 99p in the UK after the mass price reductions a few months back. They sound like the usual 80% supernatural, 20% science fiction mix from the synopses. Demon Seed should be a proper SF novel, but it was apparently completely re-written in the 1990s so may not be the novel it once was.

Fear Nothing (Moonlight Bay Trilogy #1)

Demon Seed

Strange Highways

The Door to December

The Dean Koontz Collection
  • By the Light of the Moon
  • One Door Away from Heaven
  • Seize the Night (Moonlight Bay Trilogy #2)

Be aware that you'll need access to some kind of dimensional portal to get the final book in the Moonlight Bay trilogy...

Far-Seer by Robert J.Sawyer (first in the Quintaglio Ascension trilogy) is $0.99 at Kobo.

(It doesn't appear to be at other retailers yet. I think the ebook would count as self-published, but it was previously published in paperback by Ace.)

Conquerors' Pride by Timothy Zahn is currently $1.99 in the US

https://www.amazon.com/Conquerors-Pr.../dp/B00WPQHJLK
https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/eb...nquerors-pride

A long era of peace and prosperity in the interstellar Commonwealth has suddenly come to an end. Four alien starships of unknown origin have attacked, without provocation, an eight-ship Peacemaker task force, utterly destroying it in six savage minutes. The authorities claim there were no survivors. But Lord Stewart Cavanaugh, a former member of Parliament, has learned through back channels that one man may have survived to be captured by the aliens: his son, Commander Pheylan Cavanaugh. A large-scale invasion appears imminent, and the strictest security measures are in effect . . . measures that Lord Cavanaugh has no choice but to defy. He recruits Adam Quinn, who once flew with the elite Copperheads--fighter pilots whose minds are literally one with their machines--to rescue his son. Quinn assembles a crack force of Copperheads to steal out of the Commonwealth security zone and snatch Pheylan Cavanaugh from the conquerors. Depending on the outcome, Quinn and his men will retum home as heroes or as the galaxy's most despised traitors--if they come home at all.

Note that they're Epub3 & Adobe DRM files... Much as I like the series (I have the DTE editions), I shall pass.

This makes me start to wonder if it's time to retire my Nook Simple Touches, and replace them with whatever is the last Kobo reader to support a microSDHC card.

Is it EPUB3 that worries you? For most practical purposes there is no difference between EPUB2 and EPUB3, since the books don't depend on any EPUB3-specific features. You can download and read them with ADE 1.7.2, remove DRM in the normal way and read them in Calibre or another EPUB2 reader, etc.

No, it's the Adobe DRM that I object to. I've heard so many horror stories about Adobe and Macs that I won't touch anything using it with a barge pole. I'll wait for a Kindle version to be available.

Really? While there can be issues (not registering with an Adobe ID being the big one), I get Adobe books on my Mac and convert them to read on my Kindles all the time (when Kobo has a special offer!).

8 years using it on my Macs and no issues. In fact I have had more issues with the Kindle app on the Mac - though those have been few and easily fixed.

Well, as a photographer, and a retired database administrator, I just hate Adobe. It's REALLY hard to allow my PC to be cluttered up with poorly designed junk. I have no faith in their capabilities or their good intentions. If I use Adobe products, I believe it's just a matter of time before they use their hegemonic power to screw me over!

Don't get me wrong, but if I have to sign up for multiple things to obtain one thing AND go to a different site for the download, then I'll pass. I have enough trouble remembering log in details for what I'm signed up to already, so I don't bother. I have purchased off Kobo in the past, but never something that involved Adobe (which is one reason I very rarely purchase directly from a UK publisher).

You can always download the book using the Kobo desktop app, then it will have Kobo DRM instead of Adobe DRM, which is equally trivial to remove.

In the long run though ADE is simpler, because you can use it to download from many different retailers and libraries.
