I read Blake Broyard's "One Drop" and am finishing up Sarah Waters' "Tipping the Velvet." I'm having a New Year's Eve party (wasn't going to but in-laws invited themselves; it's a good excuse to clean the house), then back to writing!

Currently reading Heretics of Dune by Frank Herbert. I'll be going through the whole series, starting at Dune and ending at Sandworms of Dune.

Started Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb.
I love the Count of Monte Christo. I've finished that book countless of times now, and every time I get gripped by the emotions in the book.

The emotions gripped me as well. However, it was not enough for me. I missed the thriller part of the book as well. Another thing that I missed is the depth of understanding of how much Edmont suffered in the prison. I didn't really feel how long he spent there. I was not moved by the 6 years of solitude as much as I used to. The rest of the years went very quickly without impressing me so much.
I believe that I owe the understanding of the situation to my previous, the first re-read, I did 12 years ago.

I don't know why I felt this way. I cannot explain it. Maybe because I read a new translation? But it was supposed to be better, more detailed and unabridged by Robin Buss.

Nope but I am on to it next. Neil Stephenson comes across as such a clever chap and perhaps a little of that will rub off. Funny that the books are only available at Harper Collins. I usually buy from Fictionwise but they dont have any of his books.

At the moment I am about half way through Mistborn and dont know quite what to make of it.

when i lived in the philippines for 4 years i bought a dvd with some thousands of ebooks in a bookstore im manila. when i broused the dvd i found out, that beside all the classics there was a folder with a lot of bestsellers on it.
at that time, it was legal to sell them in the philippines - today it's no more.

most of the books are scanned - there's a lot of typos in it which comes from ocr - but all are good readable and so i have a lot to read

happy new year to all

I'm thinking of starting volume 1 of the Baroque Cycle, but I'm not quite sure of my committment at this moment.

Anyone else read this series?

Don

I've read that; although, I wasn't clear in my post.

I mean specifically the Baroque Cycle (The Trilogy).

Yes. It is quite a committment, especially as the pace of the first book is slow at the start, but it does pick up, and I believe it's worth the committment

Personally, I'd read (or re-read if you've already read it) Cryptonomicon after the Baroque trilogy. It may have been written first, but the timelines in it are after those in the Baroque Trilogy, and some of the events, people and geography are related to them.

I've been reading them in English, where the titles are
Jar City
Silence of the Grave

The Draining Lake

And they are very good reads.
