I think, contrary to popular belief, people have a right to read without being disturbed, regardless of where they are.

Walking up to a person you can see is engrossed in a book and deliberately interrupting them just to engage in a conversation is borderline rude.

Perhaps waiting until they come to a pause, and making eye contact would be a better solution.

Being in a public place in no way gives anyone the right to intrude on your solitude. This is what people seem to forget.

Hmm. It is a very interesting point of view. I never thought about it like that.

Reading is a process for me. Absorbing information with my eyes, not concentrating on what I hear is a very important thing. I have had a go on audiobooks a while ago. I have noticed that I catch myself thinking about something else. I would get back to the story, sometimes I could listen for 20 minutes, then it would repeat. Absolutely randomly. Reading is supposed to be fun and relaxing for me. When I feel uncomfortable, then it is not my cuppa. Frustration at myself for being inattentive, for loosing concentration so easily and berating myself for it is in no way resemble a well spent time

Lessee...rooms do not serve food or coffee? Do not have easy chairs like many lobbies do? Someone is sharing the room with another who wants the lights out?

I'm the same way. I have ADD and I'm distracted very easily. I also do not read at a steady pace. Some passages read easily and others require slowing down to absorb what is being said. Sometimes what I just read doesn't quite sink in and I have to reread it (usually only a sentence, or even a fragment of a sentence, but if it didn't sink in, the interruption of continuity can disrupt comprehension of what follows). Sometimes I like to stop and "chew" on what I just read for awhile.

Maybe to a lesser extent, but I am the same.

I also have a touch of attention deficit disorder. I was pretty hyper as a kid. In fact mom has often said that when I was very little she practically had to tie me down in the highchair to get me to sit long enough to eat. lol. When I sit down with a good book though I can burn up a few hrs easily without realizing it. I would read in study hall when I was in high school and would have to remember to look up at the clock to make sure I hadn't failed to hear the bell.

Its interesting how reading is a different process to different people.

For me.......I am totally immersed in what I am reading. Everything else goes away.

Thats why books on tape hold no appeal....if I tried one while driving, I'd drive into a try. If I tried while doing housework, the'd find me holding the broom or whatever, with a blank faraway look on my face listening.

I wonder if some people (and I'm not referring to anyone here so don't hit me!) just don't read at such a deep level......

well the "depth" fits

while reading I' could fail noticing being abducted I believe.
but an audiobook would only make me DAMN angry being so slow while read aloud.

I've driven cross country numerous times and audio books have really saved my sanity. even though I am always immersed in my books, I guess I have learned to keep the partial awareness alert; mom, animal owner, soldier ingrained stuff.

the only "household chore" type stuff I have done listening to them is weeding the garden and that has worked pretty well.

I tend to find if you just look up and start going "ARRRRGHHH ARRRRGHHHH ARRRGHHHH" people quickly back away. It works on the bus, when bus-weirdos interrupt me while reading.

See, I'm just "rude" on the bus, I just totally ignore people on the bus if I'm reading and pretend I can't hear them.

Being a book lover and always on the lookout for new reading material, I do have to admit to asking people what they are reading and is it any good, but only if they happen to look up and catch my eye. But don't continue talking to them.

We can all 'multi-task, thats easy.

Keeping true concentration on what you are doing at the moment is something else entirely.

I want the total experience.....not just part of it.

yeah, I know, I get it. I guess personally I am so rarely in an environment where I can shut down all my external senses, I've learned to keep partially alert. it wasn't always that way! as a kid I was totally gone when reading! other than eye movement and page turns I probably appeared more or less commatose!

My daughter and I were, and still are, that way. And I have ADD (I do have to have non-distracting surroundings, however)!
