I don't see buttons besides the ones below the screen... anyone noticed?
If things are the same as the PRS-600, then just below the screen, the furthest 2 thin buttons on the left are "Go Back" and "Go Forward"

With 2G built in memory, I would choose the pocket edition over touch now. Though the milk white edge is not really my color.

Hope no one gets the wrong idea of how sensitive the touch screen is. This guy's gesture is quite exaggerated. On my 600, I only need to move a tiny bit to turn pages.

Darex, I think you may have had a bad battery. I've managed to keep my original touch edition with close to a full battery for about a month and a half in standby. The Kindle managed to last just about as long, maybe a little longer.

Even when I used it extensively, close to 6 - 8 hours a day, it managed to last a good month before it told me to charge again.

I had the same experience as Darex. My 600 ran down at least twice as fast as my 505 even when I wasn't using it.

I went over to the SonyStyle store today and they had the Pocket and the Touch on display.

The screen is beautiful...no more glare.

I took my PRS-300 in with me and the new PRS-650 is only a little larger in total dimensions than the 300. It's also very slim and light.

However, they've converted the "TOC" navigation to an entirely visual one - book covers. Nine per screen. So the new navigation offered in the PRS600 (that had the alphabet list on the right side, so you could click on the letter you wanted to go to) is lost. Given how many books I have on my reader, that's a big detraction for me.

I DO want to test though, by going back with a memory stick - the sample only had 7 books. So maybe it changes when there are more books (I'm not hopeful).

And the other downside for me is that they didn't upgrade the firmware to include B&N's ePub DRM. Big downside.

So while I'd walked out of there thinking I'd definitely upgrade, more and more I'm starting to think I won't.

Edit: Also just noted while reading the User Guide, the old AC adapters will no longer work. And - if I'm reading it correctly - you will not be able to read while it's charging. Boo.

Same here. I have had two PRS-600s; both last about 10 days on a battery charge.

One reason, of course, is that the Kindle and nook have wireless comms; the Sony does not. You can't have a metal case with wireless - the signal wouldn't get through it.

It's the 'more give' of plastic casings that cause the screen to break. Give me sturdy, please.

When the screens are plastic, then I might consider a plastic case. As long as the screens are glass, I'll stick with the Sony.

YMMV, of course.
My mileage certainly would vary, since I wouldn't dream of carrying around a reader that wasn't in a decent protective cover, for precisely that type of eventuality.

As soon as there's a device that turns "off" the touchscreen when in locked modus will I buy another touch screen. I find it weird that it will drain the power even if locked...

I really don't think that it has anything to do with the touchscreen. A resistive touch screen, such as the Sony has, doesn't actively use power. Devices with Wacom touch screens (which do use power) certainly do power them off when the device is shut down.

I still think it has something to do with it. Whenever you read about battery life, you'll find that non-touchscreen (no matter the type used) will last longer. The only difference being the touchscreen... My ProMedia lasts 10 days (capacitive touch screen), while my Mini will last months...

I dont have a Sony Style retail store in my area.

I do have a Sony Outlet. Do you think the new readers made it to the outlet malls yet?

I must respectfully disagree with you. A resistive touch screen is a completely "inert" component, in the sense that, like a button, it doesn't actively need power to operate it; rather, it signals the operating system when it has been activated by making an electrical contact. The reason that some devices have much longer "stand-by" battery lives than other depends on all sorts of different factors, primarily the battery capacity and how far "asleep" the device really is. A Sony PRS-600, for example, does little more than blank the screen and disable most of the buttons when it's in standby mode; the CPU and operating system are still running. The BeBook Mini, on the other hand, appears to almost entirely shut down, hence its exceptional stand-by battery life.
