Dippies. I like that. Sure, it's weird, but if it were not, they would not be newsworthy. They are young and healthy, and convinced that they have found something better. Eventually they will grow up and get pulled back into society. Meanwhile, they will entertain us normals with their know-it-all attitudes.

I wasn't thinking of anyone in particular Geoff - just the general tone of the debate thus far. (And a seemingly universal inclination, which I share, to react negatively to 'weird' ideas at first.)

Yeah this reminds me of a poem I wrote....not a very good one ... but with this thought exactly in mind...let's see.... yeah, I did post it on my website: http://www.kacweb.com/poems/nolongerdressedinblack.html No Longer Dressed in Black They no longer dress in black, they've become accountants, clerks, engineers and thieves. Cobain is dead and so is Lennon that mop-top leader of revolutions. Now middle-American angst replaces the illusion, replaces the heroes pushed beyond death, the black that waits for us all. Only the Goths are left and they never bought into it anyway, their blackness worn only on their sleeves, a spacesuit insulating them from society. They used to wear black, these clerks, thieves, accountants; clinging to it, as if to hope, but knowing there was no challenge, no future, no reason to believe. They were pulled inexorably into society, depressed enough to go along, depressed enough to suck the blackness into their bodies and smile as they hand you your change. Kenny A. Chaffin - 6/26/01 |

Regardless of whether or not we are being too hard on them - and I agree, we might be, I think they're going to Darwin themselves out of things anyway. It won't be the survival of the fittest that gets them it will be the most suitable person gets mated with...
Hi, I'm Chris. ... Becky!? That's a pretty name. ... Thanks. Would you like to go for a drink or cup of coffee after work? ... That's great. Close to home? Well, no anywhere is good actually, you pick. .... Cool, see there tonight. [several hours later] Hey there, wow you look really nice. ... No, I didn't have time to go to Bob's, errr, home and change. What would you like to drink? ... [later] Sure, let's get out of here. A walk through the park would be great! Let me grab my back pack under the table. [rustling] oops sorry, didn't mean to grab your leg, could you kick my keyboard over here, it by your left foot. ... Great thanks. Ok, let's go. .... Well, yea, you're right I do carry this everywhere I go. It's got all my stuff in it. .... No, I mean it has all my stuff. Well, except for my bike, that's outside, I'll have to get it when we leave. [later] That was really fun we should do it again. Sorry for the leg thing earlier, and for running your foot over with the bike. [hugging ... kissing] mmm, I like you too. [kissing] .... Sure, I'd love to spend some time alone with you. ... Now!? umm, ok hold on, I've got to make a phone call. [dialing] Bob? Hey it's me Chris. You know I really appreciate - .... Oh, she is? The kids too? Well, no you're right, I probably shouldn't be exposed. ... ok, thanks. [dialing] Hey Steve, it me Chris. What are you doing tonight? ... Oh really, a little party huh? Can me and a friend join? ... Oh, I see. But, well, I was going to get you new box of cereal. ... uh huh, ok, ok. I got it. [dialing] Marcie, hey it's your big bro Chris. Remember a month or so ago when you said I could - .... uh huh. .... right .... Mom said what? .... That you shouldn't encourage what!? ... But she doesn't understand what I'm trying to do, the statement I'm making, the stand against - ... well, no, not so much. Just for the night. ... Awesome, you're the best Marcie. I uh, do have a friend .. are you, umm, going out anywhere, maybe, for an hour or so?... Hello?! Marcie?! [turning back around] Wow Becky, I'm really embarrassed. I didn't think .... Becky?! [looking, turning] Becky .... ? [shoulders slumping] becky.... ? [shuffling off] why does this keep happening.... Last edited by dsvick; 08-19-2010 at 09:03 AM. |

The minimalistic nature I accept and, as someone who lives with a bit of clutter, I applaud. If, however, they lived mainly from hotels/hostels then I would be more sympathetic to this lifestyle (although as I've already mentioned I doubt it sustainable). There is a parallel to some extent with an OAP couple who live in Travelodge rooms, moving from one lodge site to another (I think it's Travelodge). It's the imposition (and it can be nothing more) upon friends that I have an issue with. |
