I seem to recall many people felt they got better battery life on the internal storage as opposed to the SD card.

I'll move some books to the SD card and see what happens. Almost sounds like the sqlite database gets corrupted on the Kobo.

I thought that might be the case, too. However, the problem persisted after a hard reset. Should that not have overwritten the sqlite database?

You might also try deleting a book and then putting it back, which is also something I have done. That seems like it would cause some possible corruption.

The hard reset doesn't always fix the problem. Do the hard reset and then replace the sqlite Db. See the sticky for instructions.

Intriguing.....

I just inserted an SD card with no books on it; turned the Kobo on, left it at the home screen and the unit NEVER went into any power saving mode....

UPDATE:

Card is a 1 GB card which I just reformatted to ensure it was FAT32. Currently has nothing on it, and after 45 minutes on the home screen, unit is still powered on.

Removing the card resulted in the unit powering off as expected.

Next step: add an ePub to it and see what happens

Well I never even got to the next step! I pulled the SD card out and assumed the unit would sleep. Checked an hour or so later, still on the home page. Tried to use it, device did not respond! Had to insert a pin in the back and do a reset.

In case the battery was low, am currently doing a full recharge.

I'm glad someone else has finally managed to document how the problem arises. It make me feel less like a statistical outlier.

You might also try leaving your Kobo out for about four or five hours during this crashed state to see if it drains your battery completely (all the way to the "E" warning).

Kashirigi; it does! I have also taken the liberty of pointing Sameerh from Kobo to this thread, and I believe he was passing it onto the QA team.

Me too.

I have the same issue. I was using a 16Gb SDHC card in the slot, but I read here;
http://kobo.zendesk.com/entries/1705...reader-support
that the kobo only supports <4Gb SD cards. Bought a Sandisk 2gb today and it still crashes.....

Any official comment?

Otherwise - very satisfied with the reader! I've only had it a few weeks, mine came out of the box with v1.4 of the firmware so I never saw the previous fast boot & cover art version. Sounds good tho.

I am not holding out a lot of hope -- I checked my ticket on zendesk yesterday and my ticket was deleted with no response to me. I filled out another ticket asking why my original ticket was deleted.

Needless to say I'm not super happy about this turn of events.

Pretty happy.

Actually, since my previous post the reader has been very reliable. I recharged the battery completely that evening, and haven't recharged it since and it's been fine - showing about 2/3 full at the moment. I also deleted all my books from it and replaced them on the 2Gb SD card and that's been fine too.

Pretty happy with the Kobo at the moment. I think I might download the v1.4 firmware and keep hold of it since it seems pretty safe. That way I can upgrade in the future and revert back to v1.4 if future versions become unstable.

Well, so I thought anyway.

Went to read a book this morning and the reader was sitting at the "sleep mode" screen with the whirling "I'm busy" graphic in the corner. Only the whirling graphic was stationary instead of whirling. The reader did not respond to the power button or the reset button - it was completely dead.

I connected the reader to a Blackberry charger and it re-started and went to the "Plugged in screen" and started charging.

So my theory is that when I last used the reader, last evening before turning the lights out, I left it in sleep mode instead of turning it off. It then crashed trying to power down after whatever delay it has between sleep and off. Then it completely discharged its battery since it was still really in sleep mode instead of off mode. So now its recharging the battery.

Which means I can't really count on it. I wanted to read a book this morning, now I can't since its charging. If I'd wanted to spend Sunday morning reading a paper over breakfast I'd have been scuppered.

Can we just get rid of sleep mode, and just have "on" & "off"? It's annoying to have to wait 30 or 40 seconds for the thing to start up every time, but I'd rather be able to rely on it having some charge in the battery.

Sleep/Power Off Settings

Quote:
1) Your Kobo Reader will now go to sleep after 15 minutes. This was the best balance between usability and battery life.
2) Your Kobo Reader will power off after being idle for 30 minutes, and a new very obvious power off screen will appear.
I just got a Kobo for Christmas and I think it's great. I was curious about the sleep/power off settings and I found this post. I read in bed a lot and I tend to fall asleep when reading, so I think the sleep/power off settings are a great feature. After reading this post, I tested out these settings and sure enough, my Kobo will go into sleep mode after 15 minutes of no activity, but it does not seem to power off after half an hour or longer. I actually left it on and didn't touch it for over three hours only to find that it was still in sleep mode and not powered off. Am I missing something? Is there a way to make it power off after a certain time of inactivity?

This post was started for the original Kobo. The Kobo Wifi had the auto power off feature removed... Personally I hope that they bring it back as a user definable feature.

Thanks for the quick response. I hope they bring it back too. A user definable feature would be the perfect solution.

I was wondering about this.

I love my Kobo going to sleep-only. I'll read for a few hours a day and not turn it off or charge it for four days. When wake in the morning, it's asleep and I can start reading instantly.

I agree, though, that it would be nice as a user setting.
