Some years ago a relative gave me Ambrose Bierce's stories and dictionary in a hard cover book. No idea what happened to it.

A panacea can not be found. It doesn't exist. There's a great big bag of tricks available and one chooses what is available and safest for the job and the environment about. It is not easy, it requires effort, investment. And first a will to save, to make changes to one's wasteful ways. Thought. If you haven't looked at improvements since 1990 you're way out of touch. You can't judge alternatives on such old information. There are other wind generators than windmills available. Batteries are recyclable in their entirety, every part of them. The few companies offering an EV on the market take spent batteries back at the end of the cycle to recycle them. Nissan's Leaf is sold without the battery. You lease it in a separate contract. You don't own it. Just visit someone who lives with off grid solar and tell them to their faces that it doesn't work... ![]() Liquid fuel and hydrogen research are alternatives being studied by the oil producers in a way they could have an alternative to maintain their cartel alive. They will do everything in their power to dissipate anyone's will to do better without them. They will lie and exploit laziness for profit. Car makers today are toy makers. They sell iPod holders and gadgets. The economy they sell is a lie, a blatant lie... You want gadgets? Okay, but you have to realize that the weight of that luxury is a third of the weight of that car. That takes extra fuel, full time... Geez, listen to me! I knew I'd wind myself this way... eventually. This is my last post on this thread. See you elsewhere... Last edited by yvanleterrible; 05-02-2010 at 09:40 PM. |

When practical, attractive, affordable EVs arrive, and laws shape the economic landscape to favor them, you won't have to force them on the public. Those who are smart enough to know that EVs are best for them, will buy them. Others will change because it will cost them less. That's the American Way. There will always be those who will refuse to change, whether they have a good reason to or not... but if EVs begin to outnumber ICEs, ICE prices will go up as EV prices come down, and the higher cost of buying, fueling and maintaining ICEs will eventually cause many of the holdouts to switch to EVs out of financial necessity. The American Way, again. So you'll still be able to buy your ICE. It'll just cost you a lot more to buy it, fuel it and maintain it. Your choice. Start saving those pennies. Sure there are. The only real roadblock is the refusal of a country's individuals to give up the bad habits they believe they've earned simply by being American... it's the bad habits that force us to use so much oil. We can adopt sensible habits, need far less oil, and can transition to existing alternative energy sources, right now. |

Still worth looking into, as (natural gas) pollutes less than oil.

Yes, it is hot out today...
Seriously, I mentioned that other forms of energy-storing tech can be added to EVs, to augment it at certain times and for certain tasks, much like an ICE also uses electricity and hydraulics to store and transmit energy for certain tasks. Flywheels and compressed air, and even steam, could be added to the electric vehicle's power plant. |

Steam cars were around 100 years ago. Could they be made today to be more efficient? What kind of pollution would they produce?

I guess I should mention an article I read years ago. Just before the US Navy, in 1895, started converting its ships from coal to fuel oil, the oil companies said the planet was running out of oil, and rasied their prices. The oil companies have made the same claim, and jumped their prices up, at least 7 times since then. Too bad the science fictional thing called a 'shipstone' is just a work of ficiton. |

I feel backed into a corner they painted us into.
I didn't choose to use gasoline, it happens to be the only cheap method of transport. |

See how they've brainwashed us into becoming oil junkies, thinking there is no way out? That's why they are EVIL, and need to be brought to public tribunal for their heinous, devious, insidious crimes! ...'scuze me... I channeled Adam West there, for a minute. Must be the granola. |
