Believe me I've tried lots of "excuses" ahem (reasons) why we need a tablet!

I generously stated that the diamond eternity ring he was supposed to buy me this year for our 10th anniversary (what diamond ring, he says confused - perhaps because I've never really mentioned it!) could be replaced instead with the apple tablet which is equally as romantic ?!? and at least we can both use it. Hmm think he's mulling over which one might be the cheaper option.

NYT has an article about the new tablet :-)

Quote:
“It will run all the applications of the iPhone and iPod Touch, have a persistent wireless connection over 3G cell phone networks and Wi-Fi, and will be built with a 10-inch color display, allowing newspapers, magazines and book publishers to deliver their products with an eye to the design that had grabbed readers in print."

"Apple is pushing for bestsellers to cost $12.99 or $14.99—and some books $9.99—with Apple taking a 30 percent cut, like iPhone apps. Publishers set the ultimate price, though."

=(

Push for $8.99 for new books and $4.99 after it's been out a year. =)

I think the big feature they are going to push is the colour screen. So magazines and journals read by the iSlate ( seems to be the rumored name ) will be just like a paper mag. I must admit that will make me wait for a while before updating my reader. And I do find the iPhone screen too small for reading ( but that might be my eyes too !! ) :-)

It's funny you should say. I used to read New Scientist, Black & White Photography, and Philosophy Now (I'm not trying to be a smarty with that last - I only ever understood every other word in it ). Now...well, I just don't. And yet if I could subscribe to some kind of analogous magazine format easily, having it "delivered" to my device automatically(*), I'd probably start reading them again. I'd actually start paying for that content again. I'm not a newspaper person, but I do like to sit down with a mag'.

It's probably just a legacy perception of desired format, but it's my legacy perception of desired format. (That is, I don't pretend my singular desires drive the market, otherwise there'd be a Massimo's Gelateria on every corner instead of a coffee shop)

Cheers,
Marc
(* There is probably already something/someone/somehow that does this. I've just been waiting but not watching for the hardware to meet the software, much like my Iliad met my ebook desire)

From MacWorld:
http://www.macworld.com/article/1459...uncement1.html

Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad today. Positioned between a smartphone and a laptop, the tablet does many of the same things as the iPhone, but on a bigger, more easily viewed screen.

Steve Jobs shows off Apple’s iPad on Wednesday.

Demonstrating the iPad at an event in San Francisco, Jobs showed how it could be used for e-mail and Web browsing, viewing photos, managing calendars and contacts, listening to music, viewing video, and more.

The iPad is a half-inch thick, weighs 1.5 pounds, and has a 9.7-inch LCD screen. It's run by a custom-made 1GHz CPU, and comes with 16, 32, or 64GB of flash storage. For connectivity, it has 802.11n, WiFi, and Bluetooth 2.1. Jobs claimed it will get up to 10 hours of battery life.

In addition to the built-in Apple apps, the iPad will also run third-party software. Senior Vice President Scott Forstall said that the tablet will run most existing iPhone apps unmodified, right out of the box. Those apps can run at their existing size in a black box or can be doubled to run in full-screen mode.

Apple is also making a software development kit available to developers, to help create apps specifically for the new device. To demonstrate what vendors could do with those tools, Forstall introduced representatives from Gameloft, Electronic Arts, the New York Times, and MLB.com to show off iPad apps they'd already built.

Jobs also introduced a new app, called iBooks, to manage e-books on the iPad. While crediting Amazon for its pioneering efforts with the Kindle, he announced that Apple was opening its own e-book store for the iPad. He said that Penguin, Harper-Collins, Hachette, Simon & Schuster, and other publishers were already signed up to supply titles. Those titles will use the ePub format—an open e-book standard.

If it really runs for 10 hours, that's pretty darn good!

I'm for the ipad!
It doesn't seem to be difficult read on a led screen as ipad has; in fact, there are no excuses for avoid led screens if we actually spend hours in front of our pc's. besides, this brand new product is much convenience than our "old school" ebooks.
E-ink was an interesting technology but kind of expensive for the final product... oh, yes, you could also listen mp3s on them... That was the big deal why we bought them? I don't think so.
My cybook cost me 300+ euros and I'm still having trouble reading pdf files or just open epub. Furthermore, this device has some license issues so you cannot store (and read) epubs and mobi at the same time before you install the firmware. Bad, if you knew that it was thought as a reader device.
If I could travel back in time I didn't have buy such a piece of museum. Give me back my money, I want a Ipad!!!!!

One reason is exactly that we already spend hours in front of our PC's or Laptop's displays. I'm one of those who get eye strain and headache if they read for another two, three or four hours on a LED-LCD in the evening. Furthermore i like to read outside (even in direct sun light) which would be difficult with the iPad's display.
