The point is an Apple tablet willl either deliver a better e-reading experience or will push Amazon and others to "up their game." How is that prospect not something to get excited over?
Neither if you want my mind. e-reader != tablet. Different stuff, different need, different buyers.

And I hope what happens to the mp3 players will not reproduce again. It sucks.

I don't to "hack" anything. But if use an app to download a book, i expect to be able to access my phone memory to get them. I expect to be able to put music on my phone without any software but my OS. Anything but UMS is a pain on linux.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to simply wait one more week and see what's actually announced?

I am excited about the "similar devices" part.

Well it obviously won't be as good at reading books as a dedicated e-reader, but when you add on the apps/internet/email/video/audio capabilities it becomes a good compromise.

NO.
A computer is not an eReader. All laptops can read ebooks (duh) but there's not a space for every laptop. Why not put a space for every single netbook on the market??

Just let people talk about it in the "Other" category. Allow people to put tags for it in the "Other" category... but it shouldn't be given special treatment just because it's an Apple device.

I agree, the only reason for me it would ever deserve its own unique spot is if there were the demand to justify it.

If everyone buys the thing and there are hundreds of posts about ereading on it clogging up every other thread then giv it its own spot, if not then it wouldnt need one anyway.[

Oh great marketing genius, we worship you.
What's funnier still is Steve Jobs and Apple haven't said *anything* other than "we want to show you our new creation on the 27th". That's it. All the hype you speak of is entirely user-generated (with perhaps a few behind the scenes "leaks" by Apple now and then).

I haven no doubt that Apple will be introducing a tablet device next week, simply because they would've stopped the rumour mill if they weren't releasing one - otherwise their stock would plummet on the 27th.

I don't know about that. The iPhone revolutionised the mobile phone market in two ways:

1. It 'woke up' existing mobile phone makers and inspired them to think differently about phone user interfaces.

2. The app store concept changed the way mobile phone applications are sold. How many new 'app stores' have been announced by other mobile phone manufacturers since Apple came out with theirs?

If nothing else, Apple is good at coming into an existing market and shaking up the status quo.

Eowyn, not sure what your e-book on iPhone complaint is. I use Stanza and beam e-pub books from my PC to it over my wifi network.

Does it bother you not to be able to use the iPhone itself as a file server? If so, try Air Sharing or any similar app for that.

If you're talking about not being able to "see" a directory of files on your phone then get over it. I did. So I have no directory level access. So what? Turns out you don't NEED directory access for a smartphone. My password/database app (iDB Pro) gives me unencrypted (or encrypted) backup capability over wifi. 99% of the music in my iTunes library was ripped by me, my own CD's, and has no DRM. It transfers and plays fine. So I have to use iTunes to manage my phone's music and podcasts. Big deal. I don't like that front end but it works. You make it sound like a problem?
