You probably remember all the hullaballoo about that new discussion forum that was opened and then closed in the spring. I was then assured by several people, mods included, that the Lounge would be a perfectly fine place for serious discussions as well, and that people would respect the new tag. This is my first thread I've started in here since, sort of to dip my toes, and I crossed my fingers and hoped it would work. A few asides are fine, but not this run-on stuff. I'm sorry, but I am quite disappointed

You are right, Ea, it is tagged as Seriously Thoughtful and I apologize for posts I've made that have slid toward silliness. Unfortunately, that seems to be the way I think. I start out serious and then start to see the inane side of things.

You know, that is something you can generally actually derive from avatars.

I doubt a very serious person would pick a silly avatar, while somebody who can't really stay serious for very long would pick a very serious avatar.

Take Steve, for example. If I were to look at his avatar, I'd say he's a serious person. I don't see hem often in the silly threads either.

But if we take DGM, I can't even put her avatar and serious in one sentence, and I think she's a very laid back granny. She also posts very often in the silly threads (even started a few of them!)

And that's a good thing. I know some topics deserve a "serious" discussion, but I'm a firm believer that you really can do both and it makes it more enjoyable for everyone.

I also know that topics drift a lot faster than continents and the best you can do as the originator is it try to keep on topic with gentle proddings as you have done Ea.

I think that the Avatar influences me on my perception of the person. After all, it is the image you see before anything else...

My Avatar is a picture of me so it is easier for people to gauge that first impression!

And the the other side has a responsibility to listen - goes both ways. "I couldn't help mysef" is a pretty bad argument I felt I was back in school with a group of children doing their best to disrupt things for a while. If anything, this shows why I still think a seperate forum for more serious discussion is a good idea.

I don't necessarily disagree. Even if just an "Other Discussion" or "Off Topic Discussion"

A "Lounge" tends to imply a relaxed, playful kind of place..
