While it is a nice device, it is also an aged device with a slow processor and -in my opinion- not enough ram. The build quality of the 505 clearly is superior to the pocketbook, as it has a metal body, but that wasn't really important fro me.
I had no issues at all adjusting to the smaller screen (especially as I have no margins on the pocketbook) and have not once regretted the change...

My experience of the 505 in entirely different -

Slow changing of fonts: only on LRFs, and only on those loaded through Calibre, and only on the first time I change to that font size. The EBL paginates LRFs for you, Calibre does not.

Changing fonts on Epubs is very quick, almost as quick as a page turn, because ePubs do not repaginate when changing font size.

I don't do PDFs - I don't think any e-ink reader is good for PDFs yet - they really need a larger screen size. Maybe the Que will solve this problem. The very few PDFs I have tried from Google opened OK, but couldn't be resized so were useless. Have not experienced the crashing issue you describe, but really don't have the experience with that.

Have not had books slow to open at all, and since I pretty much just use ePub, don't have to worry about repagination.

A dictionary would indeed be nice.

The ability to change fonts and margins on the fly would, too, be nice, but I do think you are overblowing the 505s 'problems.'

It's good that there are more readers coming onto the market, so that each person can find one that suits him/her. I'm sure you could find someone to eagerly take your 505 off your hands if you're not happy with it.

Not to be misunderstood, the prs 505 was a nice device, especially compared to a pda - it just wasn't the right device for me ( I had to many fond memories of my deceased rocketbook). As to giving the 505 away, I did in the end
I dropped it from my apartement on the street, which it survived (hence my enthusiasm for its build quality) alas with a broken power switch. In trying to fix it, I broke it...
After buying spareparts from a forum member and fixing it again I gave it away...
A brief interlude with the Cybook Gen3 followed (which is now safely in my girlfriends hands) followed by some waiting time and finally the pocketbook...

cheers,

Wait, a 5" reader will require more page turns than say an 8.1" Irex, but the screen should display the same amount of information as on the 6" e-ink screens (assuming you use the same font size). Both the 5" & 6" e-ink screens are 600x800 (see the matrix on the wiki). The print on the 5" screen will look smaller (& a bit sharper although this might not be enough to be perceptible to the user), and you will have to decide whether or not you prefer a larger font & then less info on a page. So, the 5" & 6" screens should be comparable for frequency of page turns. Maybe I'm missing something?

Dave

It is usually assumed that people will use a larger Font, thus more page turns. I do it myself

Thanks. I saw the Sony 300 & 600, and the smaller font on the former didn't seem to be much of an issue clarity wise, but then again the 600 has the touchscreen related clarity issues that might have made the comparison not really apples to apples.

Cheers,
Dave

On the sony the 300 font is not smaller. They use actual point sizes for font sizes so a 300 will use the same size font as a 600 pointwise thus you get less text on a page with the 300.

James, you have my permission to use my review and my subsequent comments for your site.
If you plan some serious publishing, please contact me through a Private Message, I would like to clear a few typos, grammatical errors, and clumsy sentences. I was writing in a great haste to get the word out for my fellow Mobilereaders. Too many great features to describe and too little time to do that ;-)

Comparision

I'm looking @ 301 & 360.

Looking at them in terms of just specs , is there any difference at all between the 301 and the 360?
(except for the G Sensor and of course, the screen size)

360 does not have any audio capabilities.
301 can play mp3 files and has connector for headphones.

Firmware is very similar (if not identical) from what I have heard. I am not sure 301 can be turned upside down like 360.

301 can be turned so any of the 4 sides is down- its a selection in the menu while you are reading.

For that matter, you can also use that selection while reading on a 360 and it will lock the orientation so that it doesn't change if you accidentally turn the device while moving about(changing your position for comfort etc). However you need to go to the main settings menu to change it back to auto-rotate.

I have turned off the auto-rotate feature. I tend to read in some strange positions and don't want the text to rotate when I do! It DOES work great, though!
