I'm not sure I understand how glare would be caused by distance between the text and the surface. But assuming this is correct, is an anti-glare film the wrong direction to go? Maybe a material that absorbs light or a material that diffuses the light reflection evenly would work better? Any technical people hereabouts that can offer their expertise?

I don't have an answer to the question you pose, however I can tell you that the issue is not the distance between the text and the surface. That only impacts the contrast since you are looking through an additional layer which other readers don't have.

However, the glare is caused by the touch screen layer, which is, by its nature, shiny rather than matte. E-ink screens by their nature are matte which is why, with every other reader on the market, people often comment that they can't believe it's really a screen (or so I've been told -- where I live, ereaders are still extremely rare and I've yet to see one other than the one I happen to own myself so I've never seen a proper e-ink screen. In fact, the only person to ever ask me about it [when was eating lunch at the mall] to date assumed I had an iPad. When I told him what it actually was, he asked me if it was a Kindle and looked confused when I explained that it was similar to a Kindle, but was not actually a Kindle either).
