I'm old school - have to finish a book once I start, cannot throw away a book (I was mad at a publisher who left the last two pages out of a book and would not send me a new one - that is the only book I ever threw away, and it was really hard to do). I did write in my textbooks - but it bothered me so much, I never bought used, only bought new. With my budget, I should not have been spending $300/semester on new books, and using the $50 I got back from reselling them playing Pacman, but everyone has to have a vice, because perfect is boring!

Thanks for the reply zelda I think that the fact you can delete notes as well as write them is a good idea.

As for the poll well I very rarely write in my books now but I used to write on and sometimes draw on the empty page at the front of a book when I was a kid.

I voted, of course, all the time and I use the light. Why do you think I bought the 700>

P.S. My books are mine! I don't share. When it comes to library books, that is another issue. I wouldn't mark them, however, I am a firm believer in dog-earring pages. I just always make a point to put them back when I am done with the book. That is because the library charged me $.05 page one time after that I learned. Always un-dog-ear the pages before I return the book.

Another reason to read eBooks, no penalty for dog-earing.

Some pbooks became post-it graves. Why not note with a mere pen? Because they would be final and any alterations would use up additional space along the margin. Sure there are pencils, but then I would fear that the notes would not be there forever as they tend to "wash out" with time.

I underline, highlight, and write in the margins of all my non-fiction "physical' books, and even some the fictional and humorous ones. I feel naked reading a book without a pen or pencil in my hand. On my Kindle, I'm always underlining and taking notes. It helps me to remember the material, even if I don't go back to review my notes.

I've been told what I really need is a coloring book.

In p-books? All the time! The only problem is that sometimes the margins aren't wide enough and I have to add a Post It note.

When I'm done with a p-book, it generally gets recycled. I don't live in a place with a big market for used books, unless they're rare and antiquarian.

One of the reasons I don't like to read non-fiction on my e-reader is because I make even more notes in non-fiction books, and none of my current e-readers lets me.

My Kindle 2 allows for note taking and underlining. All underlined text and notes are automatically saved to a text file called "My Clippings" that can be easily transferred to a PC via USB. I couldn't see having a reader that didn't have similar functions.

I haven't tried the Sony PRS600-SC Reader Touch Edition, but it advertises the ability to take freehand notes and highlight sections of text. It's the same price as the K2 ($299 U.S.).

It seems as if it was almost 40 years ago that I read in Playboy that quite a bit of fun could be had by adding the words "between the sheets" to the end of any book title.

Let me try some of the books I've read this year:

Flatland Between the Sheets. (Sounds sad.)

Death by Black Hole Between the Sheets. (Jeez, I don't even want to go there...)

The Secret Adversary Between the Sheets. (Talk about being in bed with the enemy!)

When Jesus Became God Between the Sheets. (Now, that just ain't right.)

The First Coming Between the Sheets. (To paraphrase John Lennon, now someone's gonna' crucify me!)

The Babysitter's Code Between the Sheets.

The End of Faith Between the Sheets. (How to know when the relationship is over.)

For Your Eyes Only Between the Sheets. (Braggart!)

In Search of Time Between the Sheets.

Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time Between the Sheets. (In my defense, I did read these books this year, and I didn't originate the game!)

Plum Spooky Between the Sheets. (I think I dated her once.)

Right Ho, Jeeves Between the Sheets. (The hip-hop romance.)

The Tempest Between the Sheets. (A case of delusions of grandeur.)

Physics of the Impossible Between the Sheets (Impressive!)

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Between the Sheets.

Make 'Em Laugh Between the Sheets. (Not necessarily recommended for those wishing to improve their technique.)
