Would it cut down the glare do you think?
They don't mention glare-reduction anywhere in the descriptions... I think they'd tout it as another selling-point if it did...

I've recently got a PRS-600 as my first e-reader. The glare issue doesn't really bother me. As others have pointed out you just tilt it a bit to get rid of it.
I think it's a minor inconvenience that for me is easily offset by its touch screen functionality.
An area that could deal with improvement though is the screen contrast. At night in low light locations the background is a bit dark. Not terribly so, but enough that I will probably get the Sony cover with a built-in light.
Overall I'm quite pleased with it. I used to print out stuff off the web a lot to read on my commutes, ... now those days are gone!

Actually, I'm realizing a kind of downside to e-readers. They just turbo charge your reading addiction!

Nope. I bought Lexerd anti glare protection, I think that one is just a clear coat protection, and I thought that it made it just a tad fuzzier.

A new comment now that I can compare it with Kindle 2.

I find that Kindle 2 has better contrast than the Sony Reader PRS-600. However, Kindle 2 has a pretty dark background that some may find annoying.

Kindle 2 is readable in less adequate lighting conditions.

However I believe that given adequate lighting PRS-600 looks better. That is, given adequate lighting PRS-600 is much improved, but Kindle 2 not that much (the background is still just as dark).

Save yourself the pain, brother. It's a horrible product. The light makes the cover too wide to hold comfortably, and takes a nice sleek device and bulks it unnecessarily. Plus, the light is simply too dim. I'm experimenting with lights and covers now, and I'll report in a few days what I find.

I have the MightyBright Flex2, the PocketFlex & the Travel Flex. Of the 3, my favorite one to use with my 600 is the TravelFlex. If you read in landscape mode, which I usually do, it also makes holding the reader a little easier because the clip/battery part rests nicely on my index finger as I'm holding it.

Since I've talked about adequate lighting I feel that I must add that PRSA-CL6's included light is by no means adequate (it is more of a joke).

Up until now I've been using some no name clip-on led light, but yesterday I've also ordered the Mighty Bright Xtraflex2.

I second that. I tried to talk myself into thinking it was a good product because I wanted it to be, but one look and I couldn't even pretend that it was a decent light. Personally I think it's one of the cheapest reading lights I've ever seen. The light is dim and dimmer and the neck has a little bit of a spring effect to it in that it tries to straighten out and isn't as easily adjustable as all the other gooseneck reading lights out there. I was starting to wonder if maybe it was me, or it came with a bad battery since I've heard other's say that they love the light and it's fantastic. All I know is, I never would've used it and it would've been something else to clutter up my bookshelves.

As for the Flex2, I think it's one of the best reading lights on the market, if not the best. Because of the bulkiness of the batteries, compromising on one LED instead of 2 for the travel flex was a good trade off for me. Don't feel bad for my Flex2 though, it's still used daily for a variety of duties, it's main purpose it to read while working out on the StairMonster.

+1

I just saw a PRS-600 for the first time in-person the other day and I was very disappointed. The screen looked like an old-school monochromatic LCD screen from 1987. I don't know why Sony is so hell-bent on incorporating a touchscreen into their e-reader devices. To me, the main attraction to stand-alone ebooks is the clarity and contrast of the screen. If you have to sacrifice that for a touchscreen, it's just not worth it.

I tend to agree with you.

However, PRS-600 does have the best e-ink display on the market (same as PRS-300 & PRS-505) - the only problem is that extra touch layer added above.

IMO a good reading light (e.g. MightBright) can overcome the touch layer contrast issues.

Amazon's decision of using a background having the color of cheap recycled toilet paper seems even more pointless IMO (as this doesn't even have a positive side-effect like touch).

For those of you who have used both, is the glare better on the 600 as opposed to the 700?

I'm very interested in the 900, and have learned to live with the screen on the 700, but slightly less glare would be welcomed.

i have the light and i find it quite useful and it's bright enough for me. even wrote up a long review on the cover here on the forums.

lights are pretty personal, just as ereaders are. my suggestion. try before you buy.

It is much improved over the 700 (the side-lighting actually contributed more than half the overall problems with readability).

The main problem with the 600/900 screen is:

- Reduced light reaching the eink and back from scatter in the touch screen (harder to read in low light without a reading light of some kind)

- Reflections on the touch surface. If the light hitting the e-ink can drown out the light coming from the reflection? You're fine. This is another reason low light isn't as readable, since the reflections start catching up to the actual light hitting the e-ink and become more noticeable.
