I dunno why, as I wouldn't classify either as the 'best' books I've ever read, but I've read hunter s. thompson's fear and loathing in las vegas probably 5 times now and anne rice's memnoch the devil 4 or 5?
fear and loathing because I love the exact style he used to write that book, none of his other stuff grabbed me like that one, and memnoch because I liked her take on god and the devil. I'm not religious but I like to read about religions whether historical 'fact', historical fiction, or just complete fabrications, go figure. |

Thought of another one that I re-read. Sandra West Prowell. Mystery and just that good. I think there were three in the series. I'd read them all again if I could find them. They are out of print.

My alltime Fav: "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott. I first read it as I was 8 or so, and kept reading it every now and then. I am now 41 and I still love it, alhough I don't see the same things in it as I did as a kid of course.
Nick Hornby in general, and "A long way down" in particular. It's dark but very funny at the same time. I wish I could find the whole "Whiteoaks of Jalna" serie by Mazo de la Roche as ebooks, I loved it. Various biographies by Antonia Fraser, especially Mary Queen of Scots. There are so many great books, but so little time... |

The Hobbit/LOTR, 1984, The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, On The Road and in recent years George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books.

My all-time favorites are Dhalgren by Samuel Delaney and Valis by Philip K. Dick. And my collection of Labyrinths by Jorge Luis Borges is pretty tattered, too.
In terms of stuff I've been re-reading since I was a kid... I've worn out 4 copies of The Stand. I also always seem to find my way back Agatha Christie - my favorite is The Mysterious Mr. Quin. |

Dhalgren! Yes Dhalgren. I was just looking to try and find an ebook version to re-read but it doesn't seem to be available ...unless I've missed it somewhere.

I reread Ender's Game at least once every three years. Now my kids are old enough to enjoy it and we've listened to the audio version, which is fantastic.
I think it's the book that easiest for me to read over and over. |

i keep seeing this thread and wanting to post, i've read many books for pretty much my entire reading life starting with the l. frank baum oz books (except for the first one - go figure),1 of the jon r neills and a few of the ruth plumly thompsons. i've been reading and re-reading the book of three since i was 7, and a wrinkle in time since a little before that. and there are a bunch of books i've been re-visiting periodically since i was 10.

Katharine Kerr's Deverry Cycle books. I picked up the first one in high school, and 15 years later I'm kinda scared to buy the last one of the series... *pathetic sniff*

two books...first was Anthony Adverse by Hervey Allen.. I read it in my early teens one summer and it took me the whole summer I became really engrossed in the character who is traced from birth to death.... read it a second time a few years ago not as good as the first time but still good
the other book is Don Quixote....someone ( I don't know who) said you should read Quixote 3 times in your life...in your youth... middle age and then old age...well I have read it twice and am holding off on the third as my way of denying my approaching elder status.... I am saving for that occasion the Edith Grossman translation which I have as ebook-naturally) on my phone Elihu |

That's a really interesting thought I hadn't heard before, but it rings true in a way. I wonder, if you don't mind me being nosy, how much time elapsed between your first two readings, and did you notice any differences between the experiences? Also, if you are interested, one of my absolute favorite books is a novella called City of Glass by Paul Auster (the first of his New York Trilogy). It has an interesting discussion about halfway through about Don Quixote and the authorship of the text-within-the-text. It's a relatively quick read and in my opinion very entertaining, as long as you aren't put off by a little surrealism/open-endedness (is that a word - probably not). |

I read a lot of books a couple of times Not a Penny More Not a Penny Less by Jeffery Archer, as someone mentioned early not a great literary author but i like the premise. is one of my favorites.
Cross Stitch (Outlander in the US) Diana Gabaldon which is by far the best book in the series and i must have read that 5 or 6 times all the way through not to mention reading the best bits, when I'm down. Last edited by jayne80; 09-18-2009 at 05:59 PM. |
