I chose "other" - I have a Lemote YeeLoong 8089. It's a rare enough machine, Chinese-made Loongson 64-bit processor, so it will only run GNU/Linux (Debian or gNewSense). I got it so I could cart around my software development environment quickly and easily, and show people the latest progress of software I'm working on. It has a nice-size keyboard, small but adequate wide-screen, and wi-fi. The only snag is the crummy battery life (but I knew about that when I got it). All in all, a neat little gadget...

I got to open my Asus netbook today! Yeah! It is so cute!

I haven't had much time to play with it but it was incredibly easy to get started and very fast at start up. The keys are a little tight, but nothing that I can't get used to. The screen is a good size and easy to see with no overt glare issues. All in all I am very pleased with it and I especially like the blue color! Shannon and I will have to go get coffee at Starbuck's tomorrow so I can post to MR!

So.......is your hookup 5 Ghz or 2.4 ghz? There was some discussion on the amazon forum about this.

What would be the downside to the 2.4 gh? Anyone?

Interference. There are a lot more devices operating at or near the 2.4GHz band than the 5GHz band.

Seriously, though, as long as you're able to connect and have a solid connection, you're unlikely to actually use the bandwidth afforded by 802.11n. I mean, it's not as if you're going to stream HD movies to your netbook, are you? Besides, if you don't have an 802.11n router, it's a somewhat moot point.

Nope. Just surf the net.......play with Calibre.......Keep an eye on you guys.......email.........

We recently upgraded to a cable connection from a DSL line with the wireless N modem. It generally runs at the 2.4 G connection. It is considerably faster than the DSL and plenty fast enough for Internet surfing. I can't really see a problem unless you do a lot of downloading.

But that's because of the upgrade from DSL to cable.

Assuming it's an 802.11g router, theoretical maximum (well, not theoretical, but laboratory) is 54mbps. Real-world throughput with excellent signal is probably half that (~27mbps). Unless you have FiOS or really fast cable, your wifi connection is unlikely to slow down internet browsing.

Actually, I haven't a clue and my tech geek went to bed already since he has to get up and go to work tomorrow to make money to keep me in electronic gadgets and beads, so I can't ask him.

DG - I was just getting ready to shut down and go to bed at a fairly decent hour for a change (hey, I'm getting older and need more beauty sleep) and I decided to check my battery life. I've been unplugged for about 2.5 hours now and have 5.4 hours of battery life remaining! Amazing!

That tells me, depending on how much you pay for your internet connection, I want to move to where you live.

Still, I get 16mbps throughput on my laptop (copying files from desktop) a room away from the router and that's still faster than your internet connection.

I did that last test from my laptop, down the hall and in another room of the desktop.

Oh, and I think we pay $55 for "high speed" internet.....
