Ohh, forgot about that! We've got spiders too...
Luckily, we also have cats that love to chase (and eat) them... The other day there was a spider the size of ... hmm, about 5cm paw to paw, with a big black body. It crunched when the cat got him.... |

Where I grew up in the states, we had big spiders like that. Occasionally one would crawl into bed with you and have a midnight feast. I would wake up in the morning with large itchy bites up my arm or leg. Makes me shudder just thinking about it. Sweetpea's spiders sound scarier however. I don't think ours crunched. |

My house's basement is about one meter and a half high and I often store machinery there. When my kids were small, I didn't want them to play there because it was dangerous. And because it was off limits, as all kids in that situation, they were drawn to it anyway. That basement being hard packed earth is paradise for insects. Say insects, say spiders. In the entrance there was a HUGE spider(for this climate) an inch across. I typically am respectful of life of any form, so I kept it there unharmed.
One day as I was getting in the basement to fetch part of a machine, my son, then 6, who was shadowing me came face to the spider. He froze in terror and said in a weak voice: "Papa!" I turned to see him locked in his footstep, facing THE spider. *Flash*(Gotcha) I quickly yelled:"Careful...That is the boss of my guardian spiders!" The first named that popped up was: "She's Victoria and she's mean. Be careful!" It took years before he got in there again. ![]() |

I know ...
Spiders are scary but look at it rationally for an instant. My basement is filled with wood eating insects, those spiders control their numbers. And my son is unharmed. Those tools could have severed a limb or cracked his skull and I don't know what... Spiders do good to us more than bad... they're unfurry cats ![]() |

![]() If I would see two of those big ones, within one week, I'd probably fumigate the entire house... Quote:
Same here. Though, I am getting over my fright of the smaller (as in 3-5mm small) spiders. Living outside does have a drawback... But as soon as they grow over 5mm, I'll scream, the husband will come to the rescue (or, the cat, if either of them is in the neighbourhood). Depending who comes, the spider gets caught and released (outside) or it gets caught and is eaten... But that's nature too, right? |

Zelda - Scorpion Warning!!
RE: the pet poll, I have three cats, one of which is on my **** list at the moment for licking himself raw, which will probably need a vet trip for cat prozac. Grrrr. RE: spiders and crawlies - My cousin threatened to put a scorpion in my sleeping bag when I was teenager. He started creeping around the side of the house to accomplish his nefarious plan, but he didn't count on the fact that A. I wasn't asleep yet and B. I have great hearing. I heard him, got spooked, screamed bloody murder. I scared him so badly that he tripped on a downed telephone pole in my uncle's backyard (which is where we all were) and broke his toe. Moral: If you're going to threaten a teenage girl with a scorpion in her sleeping bag, wait til she's asleep to try to put it in there. Or sneak earplugs in her ears. |
