I think with the Whispernet and intsant access to the Kindle store (which is obviously crucial to Amazon's model), the keyboard is important - it makes it so much easier to search. I use the keyboard when buying books all the time, not so much for making notes, but I wonder which is more important to Amazon

And I never notice the keyboard when I'm reading either - I agree brecklundin.

I certainly don't think either Kindle is fugly, but I wish the K2 looked less like an Apple product. I love Apple, but one of the things I found compelling about the K1 when I first started researching eBook readers was how distinctive it looked. The K2 looks bland and "done" by comparison.

I'm liking the look of the K2 a lot more than the K1.

I thought the first one looked a little too much like a prop from the original Battlestar Galactica and that just didn't work for me. The K2 looks sleeker and more modern. I'm actually coming around to the idea of saving for a K2 rather than a Sony so....

Looks like the redesign is working.

So, you are basing your choice on the looks of a product, rather than what it offers?

I think it's still ugly, even more so than the 1. The screen it way too small, compared to the size of the thing itself. At least the 1 only had that large part sticking out on the bottom of the screen (aka, the keyboard), the 2 has it everywhere...

But, as I can't even get it, the point is moot anyway...

Looks aren't everything - but physical design is a factor and I did not care for the physical design of the Kindle 1.

One of the biggest sticking points for me (since I'm not really all that concerned about Whispernet) was that the Kindle 1 only had four gray scales. It's more expensive than the Sony and I wasn't going to pay a surcharge for an inferior screen. The Kindle 2 has a better screen and more internal storage - these are the real features that make it attractive to me. Increased internal storage is a big plus for me because not only does it give faster access than an SD card, but it also cuts an additional power drain which helps with battery life.

But to be honest, I'm completely within my rights to base my choice on any factor I want so long as I'm spending my money. It may not make sense to anyone else, but it doesn't have to. I'll buy what I want based on my own criteria and be very happy.

Right now I'm thinking the Kindle 2 has enough to offer of what's important to me to outweigh the lower price and local availability of the Sony.

The Kindle II looks so thin the experience may be similar to holding a clipboard

And a clipboard is not something I'd want to spend hours reading from, actually.

In a cover, this may be immaterial.
