It's likely because of the background thread updating page counts. It's on my TODO list to optimize the shutdown procedure, haven't got around to it yet.

Actually, I do mean that screen. The difference is that I am running from source. I'm not sure if the 2026-Jan-02 beta build has that included.

Edit: checked and that feature is not in the current beta build (8.99.1).

@bustacap: I took a look at this. I did not find any leftover files from counting EPUBs. I did find leftover files removed at program exit from counting DOCX, that has now been fixed. Can you run calibre with --ignore-plugins and see if you still have the issue? If so attach one of these EPUBfiles and I will try to reproduce with it.

Done. Shutdown time gone from 5 seconds to 0.25 seconds on my machine. For comparison shutdown time was 2.5 seconds before calibre 9 beta.

The shutdown speed is indeed much faster. For me, most of that speed increase seems to be due to chaley's Backup Configuration Folder plugin being removed and no longer installable.

Will the release version of shelf view consider the Disable animation setting in Preferences->Look and Feel. I don't know where else animation is used in calibre but I recall checking that option soon after installing it.

I had the beta wedge when I changed to a stored Sort order via the Sort button, but I can't reproduce. I think it was still calculating spine widths when I changed the sort:

IMO there should be a keyboard shortcut for List view.

I cant repro it hanging with sort while page counting either, but then this would be highly timing sensitive so hard to reproduce.

Works again. Still shuts down a bit faster with the new code.

I have changed the book shelf height calculation to default to 1/3rd of the screen height and be user configurable. This gives much more height in the spine reducing truncated titles a lot. https://github.com/kovidgoyal/calibr...fb9033c561935f

Oh nice, thanks.

Hum, for some what reason, the automatic give me the attached result.

Also, I think it would be better to make the automatic height is 1/3 of the viewport of the bookshelf, rather than 1/3 of the all scren. Hmm, maybe is to have a "constant value" because viewport height can change if the user change MainWindows height (which would indeed be annoying to handle).
So maybe more 1/3 "max viewport", deducted from the scren height less the toolbars?

EDIT: Oh, and you forget to change the max hover (image 2)

Yeah, the purple highlight for the current book is not very good as it. Very confusing.
I suggest somethin similar than the Grid view behave:
  • purple highlight if the current book is also selected
  • (light) gray highlight if the current book is not selected

Is it easily possible to set the default to 1/3 of the height of calibre's main library window? The current default gives me about 2.35 rows visible. On a 1920x1080 display, the main calibre window is about 854 pixels so setting the height to 284 pixels gives 3 shelves visible on the screen.

OTOH, having the height recalculated when I change calibre from full screen on one monitor would also be a pain.
