It is still working for me to enable ads as of today and the option still shows up under devices

Have a separate issue where the hotfix won't install. It just says update failed and press the power key to restart.

Factory reset and got to install adbreak again, but now having issues getting KUAL installed after hotfix went through. This is the most frustrating jail break I have done

Had to free up more space, and that went through.

Got KUAL installed, added the renameota, booted up kual, it did not show the rename ota, so I exited, and went in again, which caused kual to crash.

Rebooted, and did it a 3rd time, and this time it finally showed the renameota and I was able to run it

Went to re-enable the store and there is no .active_content_sandbox folder (yes I have the hidden files enabled). Hard reset and it is still not there, so I left it alone, and installed KOReader, the only part of this install to go smoothly.

Hopefully the store works

This prompted me to get a new Kindle, and in case it helps anyone thinking about the same, the following is what I did for an entirely fresh device bought from Amazon UK which arrived with a 5.17.x firmware. (I already have a Kobo Libra H2O but was tempted by a lighter Kindle with KOReader for travel)

At first boot it wanted me to sign in.
I held power button and chose to restart when prompted.
After reboot it showed the standard Kindle interface, it just said it was unregistered - I could connect it to my computer at this point.
I put device into airplane mode.
I checked version - it arrived with 5.17.x (I didn't note the exact version, may vary).
I had previously downloaded 5.18.5.01 from Amazon website and put update onto device (just in case they'd pushed a patched version over OTA updates).
I selected option in menu to apply update.
After update, I filled device with dummy files (leaving approx 70mb) in case.
I turned off airplane mode.
I then selected the option to sign in with Amazon.

After a few minutes it started showing ads - turned on airplane mode and carried on with the rest of the process - just to note that it didn't show 'View all ads' in the menu at first and I had to restart to make it show up. I also needed to delete some of the dummy files before progressing to make some more space.

Why not just fill space and use WinterBreak, instead upgrading and using AdBreak?

Just want to make sure I'm approaching things right.

My 11th gen PW, ad supported, registered, has been in airplane mode for at least 6 weeks at the moment. So I'm still on 5.18.3. (Yay?)

So, if I want to jailbreak, I figure I better do it now. (Especially with the 5.18.5 issues with DRM if I understand things right.)

Anyway...looking at the instructions...I can basically 'start' at step 6, right?

1. I know I'm at 5.18.3
2. it's already been registered before
3. I don't want to take it off airplane mode so it doesn't update to 5.18.5
4. Ads are present and I'm already in airplane mode
5. I verified the 'view all ads' and I do have like 10 special offers.

So I'm all set, right? I don't have to take it off airplane mode and 'connect to the internet', right? I can just start with the 'copy the ".assets" folder step?

Yes. Adbreak just requires that you have ad assets which can be hijacked to run the jailbreak code. You already have the asset files needed for the exploit. The remaining steps all happen offline.

You can always back up the unmodified assets folder so that you can recover it if you need to start over without going online.

One snag is if you previously tapped on a special offer and saw a message like “Upgrading your kindle store experience” - see my post about that here

That's a good point, the reason is that I had no prior knowledge of WinterBreak or other jailbreaks. I just read that there was a new exploit and wasn't looking at details of previously released ones since I bought a new device and didn't have any expectation of those working. I just went onto a version talked about within this post.
