Sorry to hear about your second 700. I can definitely see the light shining through the bezel on your pic. I can't see anywhere near that kind of light escaping on mine.

Thanks for posting some new pics. My problem isn't nearly as bad as that, but I'm afraid the dust will keep accumulating like yours did.

I'm going go phone Sony sometime this week and see what they have to say about it and what options I have. The guarantee mentions repairs or refurbished parts; I would like to request a new one if that's possible. I really don't want to give it up and have to wait months to get a replacement. I have really babied this one, like I have said; it has never left my bedside more than a few feet to the PC.

I've only had it 5 months, and am reluctant to let them try and fix it and make things even worse.

Best of luck on #3.

Wow that is bad! Sorry for your troubles.
Yes, it seems obvious that the dust is coming in through the open seam. The screen should be flush and airtight to the main body. There is definitely something wrong with your unit! Send it back and complain.

Debacler: You have to give the 700 away here. People are too smart to buy it. If I can't sell it by the weekend I'm just going to hang on to it and maybe use it as a prize for something.

Wetdogeared, have you already contacted Sony about the dust spots? Did you contact the Coquitlam depot or just go to a retail store? I got my 700 less than two months ago and had noticed a bright speck when the light was on but hoped that I wouldn't get the dreaded dust spots. Unfortunately, it's just gotten worse! I don't read too much with the side-lights on but when I do, the dust spots are apparent. I'm really eager to hear what your experience with Sony will be like as I'm VERY reluctant to part with my reader for even a day.

ReD. I first called Sony Support to report the problem. The person I talked with was polite but had little knowledge of the reader and any known dust spot problems. He informed me that if the reader was under warranty there should be no problem with getting the problem resolved. He did give me a reference number and said I could go directly to the Coquitlam depot, where I would be informed of any repair/replacement options.

I then phoned the Coquitlam depot and left a message on their answering machine as to what the procedure or options I have regarding the repair/replacement of my PRS700.

I am now waiting for a call back. If I don't hear from them by tomorrow, Wednesday April 7, I will take it directly to the Coquitlam depot myself and see what my options are.

I don't want to part with my 700 for very long either. Once I find out what my options are and what they have to say at the Coquitlam depot, I will post here.

Hopefully you'll hear back from them soon. It would be interesting to see how quickly they'll be able to resolve the problem. I think I'd prefer to get a replacement rather than having to wait for a repair...

*upate*
I got a prompt call from the Coquitlam Sony Repair depot this morning. They said to bring the unit in and that they might need it for 2 days for evaluation to determine the extent of repairs.

I went directly to the depot, armed with my receipt, original box, Sony Support Ref# and the photos that I've posted here earlier.

I explained the situation to the receptionist/representative and showed her the photos, which she took to show her manger. She returned and said since it was still under warranty that they would clean the dust spots there (they have a clean room). I was also told that any further cleanings would probably result in a fee of $50.00 since this was not a known defect or under a factory or national recall.

I said WHAT to that, then she, or the manager who I requested come out, told me I may need to resolve the issue with the retailer if I'm not satisfied. The retailer is sonystyle.ca, all part of the same company. Since this is a Repair Depot, I take it they only do repairs and not replacements or refunds.

I'll wait and see if the dust spots are properly cleaned and if they re-occur. If they do, I'll make a stink at sonystyle and/or here until I get a satisfactory result.

At least I know they are working on *my* reader, and that I won't be getting someone else's refurbished one. I really hope that by cracking the unit open that they don't make things even worse. I'm hoping for the best.

Since this is the long Easter weekend, they informed me it should be available for me to pick up on Monday.

I'll keep you updated by posting here.

WDE.

Her best guess on an eta was 6-12 weeks.

I'm telling you... I'll never EVER /EVER/ buy another sony product. In 6-12 weeks I will be selling a brand new PRS 700 in the flea market.
Maybe you'll get one of the new SnickerNet or WiFri versions Sony is reported to be working on. They might be planning to give you an upgraded model and that's why they don't have on in stock now to replace yours with.

...just to give you something to hope for...

I can't believe they'd make you shell out $50 for something that's obviously a manufacturing defect! Hmm, it'll be interesting to see what they think is the actual cause of these dust spots and if they can solve the problem in any way. I'll pop over to the depot soon after you get your reader back, that way they'll realise that yours isn't the only case out there. Hopefully your problem gets solved permanently and you don't have to keep pursuing the matter endlessly...

*on-going updates*
Called Sony repair depot today. They said they had to order a replacement screen for the repair of my PRS700, which would take four business days.

What does this mean? I don't know, but somehow a simple cleaning turned into a repair. I'm still hoping for the best, and it looks now as if I won't get it back for another week.

WDE.

Ugh, that's horrible. A two-day cleaning turns into an extra week of repairs...can't be good. So this would mean that because you had a defective screen, you wouldn't be liable if the problem were to arise again, right?

Thanks for the update.
