Can we use the 11th gen Kindle matcha / 12th gen PPW without registering it like we could the previous gens?

I've seen multiple posts on reddit about the "Download & transfer via USB" option is missing for other people, and they're linking it to registering their new Kindles (which doesn't make sense).
And that the new Kindles are MTP now?

Can somebody with a 12th Gen confirm that both of those aren't true.
Cause people on this forum would've already made a stink if they are.

Currently it seems to be the case that "Download and Transfer" isn't available to 12th Gen Kindles.

The stink has already been made, in two different threads at least. Yes, unfortunately it seems both are true.

Two questions. For those who just read, what is MTP? And the download/transfer thing, is that like now when a site, like BF or whatever, emails me the file to a book it will be useless with a new Kindle?

No. D&T is a way to download Kindle books to your computer and put them on your Kindle via USB. It was first introduced when wifi was not yet universal. These days it's mostly used for DRM removal, as it's the easiest way to do that. So Amazon wants to get rid of it.

You can still transfer files to your Kindle via USB. Just not your Amazon purchases.

Doesn't it make sense, from Amazon's point of view, to get rid of download and transfer? How many homes don't have wifi, or a smartphone for wifi (and have a wired internet connection)? They stopped the cell versions of Kindles, why not download and transfer?

I don't think eliminating D&T makes sense from a "how many people really need it?" point of view. It's not as if providing the Download and Transfer option was costing them recurring fees (unlike cellular contracts were).

Getting rid of it only makes sense to me from a "we're looking to eliminate the most common path for DRM removal" scenario.

I don't really have an opinion on whether this is a good or bad thing -- as DRM removal is something that doesn't interest me any more. Except that I'm sure at least SOME people who don't remove DRM are going to be affected by such a change.

Ok, so when an author's site or email has get my book and it takes me to BookFunnel or whatever instead of to Amazon that will still work with the new Kindles?

D&T only involves books from the Kindle Store and no others. The purpose is so that you can buy a book on Amazon and get it onto a Kindle without having that Kindle online. It doesn't have anything to do with sideloading books from elsewhere over USB or using Send to Kindle services.

MTP is a way that a device makes its storage available over USB. It's an alternative to presenting as a block device that the host computer would have to understand it's filesystem, etc., and has been in use by Android devices for over a decade, since the Android 4 days. It's an entirely different change that does not relate to the D&T change.

It seems that since the D&T issue has been reported, it has become the main focus of the new Kindles.
It reflects rather good that novelties and functionnalities are not always hardware-based. On the contrary. Get me the previous gen for the 13th gen in four years with the D&T function and I'll be glader than I am now.

Okay the hardware is good, faster, althought the brightness of the new pawperwhite could be better (just has the previous one would have been perfect actually). But for a few days everything has seemed to evovle around the D&T.

I'd summarise my thoughts like that concerning the new Kindles :
I'd say it's a deceiving refresh of the PaperWhite ; the Color Soft is a counter offer to the existing offer on the market with nothing new as far as the Kindle ecosystem is concerned.

I think one of the reasons for the PW6 is that the PW5 was using a 6.8" screen and it's possible that the 6.8" screen being not much used were costing more then the 7" screen now used in the PW6.
