I usually page down on My Books and then page up again, and that prompts the books to appear (when sort is set to recent books first). It always takes a while on the Libra 2, due to ye olde CPU.

I've sideloaded repeatedly on my Clara HD running 4.37.21586. I do absolutely nothing special and let Calibre handle the ejecting and so far no problems.

But you do see a delay when disconnecting with calibre? To me, this is a problem.

Side loaded mode?. Been just plugging in Both my Kobos, and tap connect.
Other that the bad FW a while back that would corrupt the DB. It just works.
(I have Kobo Utilities and Extended edition. I mostly us the extended edition)
When I 'eject', I do wait for the Kobo to settle out all the way.

With SideloadedMode=false, my Clara 2E acts as it always did when disconnecting from calibre. With SideloadedMode=true, it is different.

The delays I thought I saw the first time(s) with SideloadedMode=true appear to be much shorter now. I am only trying 1 book.

Man, I never wait for any of that. I eject, Calibre kicks it out and Windows makes the default disconnect sound, I unplug. The Kobo almost always still shows the "I'm plugged in" screen. My Kobos have always been very slow about coming back after sideloading.

Before I plug-in my Libra 2, I make sure it's at the home screen. Then I connect to my calibre library. When I am done and I eject, I make sure the Libra 2 is back to the home screen before I pull the plug unless I'm going to reconnect to the USB.

Hmm, I always wait until the books have been processed and the home screen has reappeared. It doesn't take that long and I'm usually in no hurry.

Like you, I too don't mind the home screen and haven't bothered to enable the sideloaded mode.

Perhaps you are wiser than me.

I have an old Nook ST that I back-up everything on. Because of Kobo's database update thing, I usually:
  1. Add books to the Clara, eject
  2. Add books to the Nook, eject
  3. Plug in the Clara again to update the database
