Sadly it is not possible to use ereader for funeral pyre

This is a clear advantage of pbook against ebook

More seriously: I take with me my ereader only when I presume that I will have the occasion to read.

That's me as well. If I took it only when I expected to have a chance to read, the day I was stuck waiting 4 hours for a tow truck would have been pure hell. Instead I had an enjoyable afternoon of reading.

Have you ever tried to burn a Book or Magazine? Way back when, we used to burn our trash in a fire pit. Magazines almost always took many burns to consume them. Burn a book...Nooooo!

Fahrenheit 451 (movie) used a flamethrower to keep the pages burning.

I don't remember having any high kaolin glossy magazines in my collection so I suspect that we would not have any issues with the paper burning.

And yes, I did burn books once in high school after we read Fahrenheit 451 in class. AFAIR, the main issue we found was that a book has a poor structure to support burning. Fanning the pages or crumpling them did make burning easier.

I have always taken a book every where I go. In school I would rush to get to my next class so I could read before the second bell.

Wow! 8 pages of posts.
I do like the 10+" screen sizes for e-ink comic books.
For text I'd agree that 7" black and white is plenty.

I can't think of any features I would like added to an e-ink device, outside of the larger screen size, especially since the lighting and contrast technology has improved so much over the past decade. Maybe Qi charging or a cover that could also copy and display the cover art of the book I'm reading. (The single thing I don't like about electronic readers is not being able to see the book cover before I start reading.)

I'm looking hard at the Kobo Forma and Amazon Oasis, but am having trouble justifying the $300 when my current electronic reader is an 11" iPad Pro. It's a little too much for reading (too heavy, too bright) but I can settle for this easier than I can settle for a smaller screen (not enough words, too many page turns.)

I would buy a new eink reader if they would offer an additional incentive to offset the price -- like a complimentary Kobo VIP membership or a discounted Kindle Unlimited subscription.

On one hand, I feel like the prices should be coming down, but on the other, hand it appears to be even more of a niche market now than when they first came out; the small production and sales will keep the prices high.

If the Oasis is in your consideration, what about the Libra? Same screen size as the Oasis, basically similar feature set, much cheaper.

Because if I go with Kobo, I want that extra inch.

I hadn't even considered the Oasis until I saw the previous model was on sale yesterday, but then decided that I would prefer having the lighting on the new model, since I was already compromising on size.

What a big price difference though! It does seem worth looking into. Thanks for sharing!

Carta came out (according to Google) in 2013, so I believe there hasn't been any significant change in contrast since than. And I don't think there was much of a jump in contrast from Pearl to Carta, although I do appreciate the difference.

There are probably features I can't think of that would get me to upgrade, but some that come to mind are still better contrast, less ghosting, remote for page turning, and plastic substrate. Some people seem keen on foldable devices. And I'd still like to near perfect lighting.

Kobo displays the cover art FYI. They have since the beginning. One of their cooler features. If you just want a reader to read ePubs they are pretty good.

Problem is there really isn't much reason to upgrade for most people unless they break. Screens haven't changed much in the last 5 years.

Similar feature set? Not likely. The Libra has many more features and very good Calibre integration.
