Wow this topic has been gotten derailed so far out of its track.
Anyways. Just gonna add in my two cents about bookstores in general. It made me miss the times where me and my best friend would go into every book store we come across whenever we go out to malls or some place similar. It was fun browsing through shelves and shelves of paperbacks and hardbounds. Also the art/stationary supplies. We mostly did windowshop, being broke high school/college students at the time. While I do miss browsing through a bookstore from time to time, I'm very glad I was introduced to e-Readers. Most of the time, a paper back is equivalent to up to 3 ebooks in terms of price. |

Would a printed "manga" be considered a printed book or just another "comic" which is not considered a book?
Wondering as I know of a used book store that appears to have a big/huge stock of mangas. will stop by to check it out. |

There was a big chain of used books here. They had manga for 2 bucks per volume. I completed 2 series by going back to their outlets for a few months ![]() Sad that they closed now. And as for the question, well, it is printed in book form (not like how western comics are printed and bound). |

I just read an article from Giorgio Agamben (Italian philosopher). A paragraph again proposes one of the points I expressed many times in these pages - on the importance of bookstores and on the dire state of their median instance as found during these times:
Imagine entering a pharmacy and asking for a product you urgently need. What would you do if the employee replied that that medicine was produced already three months ago, hence it is not anymore available? This is exactly what happens today entering a bookstore. The book market has become an Absurdistan in which the circulation has a book kept in the shop for as little as possible (oftentimes no more than a month). Consequently, the same publisher plans for books that must exhaust the printouts - /if/ sales actually happen - in short terms and renounces building a lasting catlogue. So although I call myself a good reader I am more and more uncomfortable entering bookstores (exceptions aside) where the tables are only covered by novelties and where I can everytime more hardly find the medicine (the book) I have a vital need for. If booksellers and publishers will not revolt against this system, mostly a consequence of the distributors' policies, it will not be a surprise if bookstores will disappear. Considering what they have become, their current form will not even be missed.

This topic is all wrong considering that eBooks are also books.

Man, we had this debate years ago. Your statement is just your opinion, and one that I would consider to be wrong. For centuries, a book is made up of sheets of material bound together along one side, usually with two covers. It describes the physical packaging, not the contents. You can have a book of matches, coupons, tickets, paint or carpet samples, cheques/checks... none of which have any kind of story or exposition in them. My 1970 American Heritage Dictionary does not have any definitions that make "book" synonymous with a novel, or reference document, or any other type of contents.
Yes, plenty of people refer to the contents as the "book", and it is generally accepted without quibbling, but turning that around and insisting that it is wrong to use the old and proper definition of "book" is going too far. So, leave the title alone. |

From the context of the original post - is the book STORE. It was a nostalgic post in that I, who used to LOVE book stores and libraries....almost never go to one any more. eReading has near completely taken over for me. And I'm quite happy with that.
However, it was NICE to go buy a "real book". To fell them. To smell them. To walk around the store and discover them. It's DIFFERENT than book discovery on Amazon, here in this place, or anywhere else on the web. Even though it was a nice experience, I have not gone back to a book store since I wrote that post. The advantages of reading an ebook are overwhelming....for me. But...I sure hope enough of YOU go out there and buy real books at real book stores so that....on occasion, I can still go to one too. |
