It was a combination of not really having an opinion in general and feeling that I read too much.
They liked that I read, however they did feel that I read too much as compared to playing out side, that I read at inappropriate times (sometimes preferring to read instead of eating dinner) and/or that I read too late instead of going to bed on time. My dad was shocked at the times that I would borrow 12 books from the library at once - not realizing that I could inhale a "Choose Your Own Adventure Book" in an hour or less depending on the story and its options. My stepmom didn't quite get my brief but intense Stephen King period in highschool, but not only allowed me to go through the phase, supported it as well by buying 5 or 6 of his books for me to take when I went to go visit my mom that summer. |

Same here. Both of my parents were voracious readers and would have been pleased that we read. I remember being read to as a young child, but think don't they actively encouraged me to read - it was just taken for granted that books equal pleasure.
My mother told me that one of my teachers sent a note home, annoyed that I'd read the full reader the first day we got it. She wanted them to hold back my reading. She must have been a very young teacher ![]() Last edited by Victoria; 01-03-2015 at 09:47 AM. |

You don't have all the correct options in the poll.
My parents liked that I read. Set 1 needs to have an option for that. Set 2, I did read sometimes under the covers with a flashlight. But without Set 1 being fixed, the poll isn;t useful. Sorry, |

Absolutely some parents don't encourage reading. Back when I was working in a public library, I remember one of the library assistants saying the teacher wanted her daughter to read at home, and "I hate reading, I'm not going to get her to read." Interesting career choice there, I thought.
Me, I read voraciously from the age of three. My parents approved except when I did things like walk into lamp posts with my head buried in a book. |

When I asked if she minded telling me why, she said her mom didn't want her reading about magic because her mother was afraid she (the student) would try to learn how to become a witch. I was so upset, but of course I couldn't say anything. |

One of my older sisters, who was training to be a teacher, encouraged me to read books, though I was already very interested in reading even before I could read. I would hold a book and swivel my eyes from side to side as I saw adults doing. However, my sister bought me a series of Enid Blyton books: The Finderouters and Dog Mysteries. I devoured them.
My parents weren't too bothered either way. |

You never can. I also saw parents who wouldn't let kids read the "rubbish" they wanted to read because they weren't approved classics... so the kidlets read nothing

Exactly. I don't think some parent realize what a disservice they do to their children by stifling them in that way.

If I become a parent one day, I hope to be the one who encourages their child to read, but never nag them to the point where they wouldn't want to touch a book/tap an ebook.
By the way, I find it very uplifting that most of the users said their parents are usually pleased whenever they read. ![]() |
