I'm traveling by bus every day about 20 mins. I even read standing - one hand on something to keep me from falling and another with book. Only regular cover - nothing fancy. And I keep it in my bag (not backpack) with assorted junk I keep hauling around.

In this thread alone 11 broken screens in such a short time from how many real users who visit this forum? I wouldn't be surprised if 10% really breaks.

I'm not sure that it will fit with the softcover as the brown one is a bit thick, but other than that, it is a very good fit.

I've travelled with two different Gen3s for 9 months, with zero problems. The important thing is not to have anything "dig into" it, or "bend" it - that's what results in broken screens. Keep it flat and supported and you'll be fine. I travel with mine in a briefcase.

Sounds like a good idea, but do you think the pressure on the unit from the thick cover, since it's not a perfect match, could cause damage?

I can understand the "digging into", but not so much the "bend". I mean, I've used the unit laying in bed, holding with my left hand, then my right hand, in various places on the unit, how can you tell when you're "bending" ever so slightly? It's enough to make you a nervous wreck!

Think of laying it down on a Bible which is next to another, slightly smaller book. Imagine that the Cybook is mostly on the Bible but partly over the other book. Now imagine you've just placed a large, heavy, loaded plate of oatmeal cookies onto the Cybook (which is in it's case) in preparation to watching the "Persepolis" DVD. *INSTANT* bending!

I have had mine in my purse pretty much every day since I received it in late January. I read it on my train commute, also while eating (alone, of course!) in restaurants, etc. Also have taken one round-trip plane trip with it (Phila-Chicago). I keep it in the case that came with it pretty much at all times, unless I need to reset it or something.

I'm careful with it, as I would be with any expensive piece of electronics such as a laptop or smartphone.

That being the case, I'm surprised Bookeen didn't design a much stiffer book cover which might guard against such bending (as well as pressing into). Might have saved them all the negative reactions they're accumulating here.

Do something right and the customer will tell three people. Mess up and the customer will tell 3,000! It's just the way things go. Between 10% and 15% of the displays are breaking - depending upon how people are handling them - and this appears to be common across the brands. Of *course* those with broken displays are going to complain. I did!

I use the Titanium eCaddy for my Sony and it is a perfect fit with the original cover. I could not live without it. and I'm very sorry to hear that Bookeen makes you pay for repairs in circumstances like Ortep's.. not good for goodwill/advertising/customer loyalty at all. I know I read that Amazon was doing repairs for free.. may not be true any more, but that's the sort of support i expect if screens are this fragile.

Yeahbut... The Bookeen Cybook and it's softcover is *thicker* than the Sony PRS and it's softcover. Still, with the foam, there may well be 'crush' room that will accommodate the Cybook and it's cover. However, there's no reason why the eCaddy can't hold the Cybook sans cover!

Do something right and the word gets out, witness the iPod, iPhone etc. People repay with both kind words and their money. That money also represents an unspoken contract that they are receiving an item of reasonable quality. People have a right to complain if the quality is not reasonably good. 10% to 15% breakage is statistically significant, and simply too high.

According to the straw poll we did at Teleread, the break rates are 10-15% for all three devices. Cybooks are a little higher, but it's still within the margin of error...we shouldn't jump to conclusions.

Perhaps PCs can manage with a 10% break rate because they are known parts, but e-ink is still pretty exotic.

Okay well, I took a chance and orderd the eCaddy...I'll let you all know how the fit is
