Bargain @ $1.99 or $2.99 from Open Road Media in multiple stores (couponable @ Kobo):
LGBT History Month promotion, presumably good through October, with histories and biographies and personal memoirs and also fiction by LGBT authors and/or on LGBT issues. NB: it seems like not all the actually discounted stuff is shown on the dedicated "sale tab", so you might want to page through all of them to see if there's anything else which interests you. Also, some things like the Mary Renault novels are geo-restricted to the US. US Politics promotion, which the blog says is good through October. Stuff on the campaign system, J. Edgar Hoover, the Kennedys, the McCarthy era, post-Watergate, and general leadership etc. Some of them seem to be really good titles, by Pulitzer Prize winners and National Book Awards honourees. Sourcebooks (couponable @ Kobo) also has a few non-fiction sale titles marked down to $2.99, mostly marketing/business stuff (linkage for all their stuff sorted by price). But I wanted to highlight this one: Jennie: The Life of the American Beauty Who Became the Toast--and Scandal--of Two Continents, Ruled an Age and Raised a Son-Winston Churchill-Who Shaped History by the late Ralph G. Martin (Wikipedia), originally out in 1969 and 1971 and now collected into a single volume. Apparently this was a highly popular bestseller at the time, which garnered quoted blurb praise from Winston Churchill's official biographer, and for $2.99 less coupon, I figure it's a pretty good deal that I'm going to try, since I've always kind of liked "Lady Randy", who had a really interesting life from what I've read about it. |

Free Kindle Book about the First Apple (the Computer, Not the Fruit)
The First Apple. By Bob Luther (author); Larry Rodman (editor). 4 1/2 stars from 20 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $18.95; digital list price $4.95; Kindle price now $0.00. MassMedia Press, publisher. 391 pages. http://www.amazon.com/First-Apple-Bo...he+First+Apple.
Book Description In 2004 Bob Luther noticed a tiny classified ad in the Washington Post newspaper, for a sheriff's sale. The local sheriff was preparing to auction goods seized from a successful dot com entrepreneur who had fled the United States. Despite having sold his company for one hundred million dollars, he had failed to make payments on his private jet, which led to the seizure of the contents of his home. The ad indicated the auction would include the very first Segway ever built, and the actual first Apple computer ever sold. Luther had less then a week to do research, and to figure out if the items were the real thing! This story takes you to the auction and then on a journey to find out the real story on this 38 year old historic Apple machine. Friends and co-workers of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak from the days of Apple being in the garage are interviewed and share their own stories. The elusive machine, the Apple-1 is one of 200 built in the earliest days of Apple Computer. Today the survivors are rare and highly sought after by collectors at auctions worldwide. The book also includes stories of those collectors. What starts off as a little story about an old and very outdated computer, grows to include a historical account of the early days of what's become one of the worlds most successful and valuable companies. This book presents that beginning time on a very personal level, and with a cast of colorful characters. |

Wellington: A Military Life by Major Gordon Corrigan
Product Description "Next to a battle lost, the greatest misery is a battle gained." - Wellington The Duke of Wellington, the most successful of British commanders, set a standard by which all subsequent British generals have been measured. His defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815 crowned a reputation first won in India at Assaye and then confirmed during the Peninsular War, where he followed up his defense of Portugal by driving the French from Spain. Gordon Corrigan, himself an ex-soldier, examines Wellington's claims to greatness. Wellington was in many ways the first modern general, combining a mastery of logistics with an ability to communicate with and inspire men of all ranks. He had to contend not only with enemy armies but also with his political masters and an often skeptical public at home. Major Gordon Corrigan is a retired Gurkha officer, a member of the British Commission for Military History and Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. Fluent in the Nepali language, he is now a freelance military historian and battlefield lecturer. He is a well known figure on the History channel. He is also the author of `Sepoys in the Trenches'. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NV3F8YQ/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00NV3F8YQ/ http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00NV3F8YQ/ The Homicidal Earl: The Life of Lord Cardigan by Saul David An outstanding biography, stimulating, persuasive;y and superbly written (SUNDAY TIMES) This splendid book partly redeems the chap supposedly responsible for the massacre of the Light Brigade at Balaclava. Grant: The Man who Won The Civil War by Robin Neillands, who is the author of several acclaimed works on the First World War including `The Death of Glory', `The Great War Generals on the Western Front', `Attrition: The Great War on the Western Front, 1916' and `The Old Contemptibles'.
Sam Grant made famous the expression `unconditional surrender', which is how most of his campaigns ended - for his opponents. A hard-drinking soldier in a hard-drinking army, he led the Union armies to victory, first in the West and then in the East, eventually compelling the main Confederate army under Robert E. Lee to surrender at Appomattox in 1865. Yet at the beginning of the Civil War no one, least of all the man himself, anticipated that Grant would lead the Union forces to victory. Ulysses S. Grant was a failure as a pre-war soldier. His subsequent business career was even worse. His emergence as a successful general and eventual promotion to Commander-in-Chief is a stunning example of how a soldier's peacetime career sometimes gives no indication of how he will perform in a major war. Robin Neillands investigates how and why Grant emerged from pre-war obscurity and whether his ultimate victory was won by brains or brawn. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NWC1U8E/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00NWC1U8E/ http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00NWC1U8E/ |

Ted Williams Memoir, Written by His Daughter--Marked Way Down
Ted Williams, My Father: A Memoir. By Claudia Williams. Rated 4 1/2 stars from 44 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $26.99; digital list(?) price $12.74; Kindle price now $1.99. Ecco/HarperCollins, publisher. 325 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Ted-Williams-M...er%3A+A+Memoir.
Book Description In this poignant memoir, Claudia Williams, the last surviving child of legendary Boston Red Sox great and Hall of Famer Ted Williams, tells her father’s story, including never-before-told anecdotes about his life on and off the field that reveal the flesh and blood man behind “The Kid.” Born after her father retired from baseball, Claudia Williams grew up with little idea that her dad was one of the most revered sports figures of all time—until she finally saw him in uniform at Fenway Park, receiving the adulation of thousands of fans. Now in this moving and surprising memoir, Claudia offers an unexpected look at Ted Williams, viewed from a unique and fresh perspective. Here she recalls her childhood growing up with a baseball legend after his heyday, capturing their loving yet tumultuous relationship, and shares the beloved stories he passed on to her. Reconciling his talent on the field with his life off of it, Claudia reveals the myriad passions—including baseball and much more—which shaped who he was. She also speaks candidly for the first time about his controversial choice to be cryogenically preserved after his death. Complete with sixteen pages of never-before-seen color photographs, told with sincerity and heart, Claudia William’s poignant memoir is a love letter to New England and one of its greatest sons—Ted Williams—the champion, the man, and most importantly, the father. |

BrainCapital Technologies, publisher. http://www.amazon.com/Predicting-Jim...r+2014+%283%29. Book Description Still learning from Warren Buffett and George Soros? Meet The New Superman of Finance. He made 8 Billion Dollars in 5 Years. Time to Learn from the Quant King, Jim Simons. This Book tries to uncover the methods behind Jim Simons Quant Approach. The focus is on Braincapital Technologies which has been used by several Global Trading Banks and also a Top 5 Program Trader who traded 12 percent of stocks on the NYSE. Through millions of computational intensive mathematical calculations, the technologies output a 6 step best scenario for each Stock and Volatility Index. The history of BrainCapital technologies has its humble beginnings in 1988. David Lee secured a Singapore Merchant Banking Scholarship which led to stints in Goldman Sachs New York and trips to Chicago Trading Houses. This helped to incubate an idea to develop a machine driven program-trading software for foreign exchange David with help from scientists came up with the first version a couple of years later and subsequently in April 1993, made a presentation of the model and findings at the SECOND ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE APPLICATIONS ON WALL STREET. The underlying pattern recognition technology has undergone much refinement ever since. Between 1993 and 1997, the software was used extensively by program traders at Hong Kong Bank, Swiss Bank Corp and BHF Bank. Subsequently, a governmental grant and venture capital group funding by Boston based VC followed in 1998. Since then, Braincapital technologies has been used by several MNC banks and also a Top 10 program trader who traded 12 percent of stocks on the NYSE. The technologies use state of the art artificial intelligent technologies like neural nets, fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms. Through millions of computational intensive mathematical calculations, the technologies output a 6 step best scenario for each individual stock, bond or currency. Statistically, it can be verified that the technologies has a 65 to 80 percent accuracy rate of predicting price momentum (speed of trend) for intraday, daily and weekly time spans. Viceroy International Limited in 2002 completed the 100 percent buy back of BrainCapital Technologies. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 10-23-2014 at 05:40 AM. |

The World Wonder'd: What Really Happened Off Samar by Robert Lundgren
This book is an analysis of the primary documentation from both the Japanese and the United States for the naval Battle off Samar which took place on October 25, 1944. The conclusions of the analysis differ greatly from what has been previously written; there are many revelations about the true role of the famous vessels on each side and about the oft-questioned thinking of the contending admirals. There are hundreds of photos and drawings and several hundred footnotes within the book, each placed within the text at the moment they occurred. This allows the reader to witness the battle as it played out, literally salvo for salvo, with complete confidence in the accuracy of the narration. Essential reading for anyone interested in battleship combat, the naval history of World War II, the Battle off Samar, or the U.S. and Japanese navies. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KN1I09O/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00KN1I09O/ http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00KN1I09O/ |

The ebook is 29 pages. I didn't download the book, but I've used Evernote free for a number of years, and find it very effective and very efficient across all my devices. As an observation, this book doesn't state what version Evernote it applies to, nor whether it's the free or paid version - and they offer different features. |
